Your Destination —
Porto Santo is 25 miles north-east of Funchal and transport between the two islands is very easy. You can choose whether to reach it by ferry, which takes just over 2 hours, or by a convenient 15 minute flight. The ferry sails every morning, returning from Porto Santo to Madeira in the evening.
The boat itself is very comfortable with a number of lounges, restaurants and bars on board. Meanwhile, the decks offer fantastic views of the coast of Madeira and the archipelago of islands. For those who prefer the speed and convenience of flying, there are regular flights between the two islands.
Once you arrive in Porto Santo you will simply be able to relax, soak up the sun, admire the pure turquoise of the clear sea waters and perhaps enjoy a few spa treatments too. It is definitely worthwhile visiting the main town of Vila Baleira, and you may wish to take a day-trip to explore the unusual scenery of this peaceful island.
Funchal is a wonderful city to explore - take the cable car up to Monte for the best views of the coast below. The area is famous for its beautiful botanical gardens, with their rare plants and flowers.
Whatever time of year you choose to visit, you are sure to find vibrant blooms and lush greenery. You should definitely spend some time soaking up the atmosphere of the local markets, selling fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers and local handicrafts such as wickerwork and fine embroidered lace. The most famous of these is Funchal's Mercado dos Lavradores, but many other towns and villages have their own local markets.
Exploring further afield, outside Funchal, you will be astonished by the varied landscape, spectacular scenery and rich flora and fauna of this beautiful island. Don't miss the dramatic cliff of Cabo Girao, the beautiful laurel forests of Encumeada and the natural volcanic pools of Porto Moniz. You can choose to hire a car or take one of our excursions, accompanied by a professional English-speaking guide.
