Your destination —
Madagascar
Welcome to Madagascar
Drifting off the southeastern coast of Africa, Madagascar is a world unto itself—an island where lemurs leap through ancient forests, baobabs pierce cobalt skies, and traditions run as deep as the Indian Ocean. With nearly 90% of its wildlife found nowhere else on Earth, Madagascar is a nature lover’s dream, layered with vibrant cultures, rugged adventure, and haunting beauty.
Don’t miss
- Wandering through the surreal Avenue of the Baobabs at sunset
- Trekking in Andasibe-Mantadia National Park to hear the eerie calls of indri lemurs
- Snorkelling or diving in the pristine waters around Nosy Be or Île Sainte-Marie
- Exploring the stone forest of Tsingy de Bemaraha, a UNESCO-listed geological wonder
- Strolling Antananarivo’s historic old quarters, buzzing with market life and colonial charm
Culinary culture
Madagascar’s cuisine is a flavorful fusion of African, Asian, and French influences. Rice is the staple, often served with zesty laoka (side dishes) like zebu stew, coconut-simmered fish, or romazava (beef and greens). Try street-side mofo gasy (sweet rice cakes) with coffee in the morning or sample ravitoto—slow-cooked cassava leaves and pork—for a hearty local favourite. Vanilla, one of Madagascar’s most prized exports, adds an aromatic flourish to both sweet and savoury dishes.
Dive deeper
Beyond its wildlife, Madagascar is home to 18 ethnic groups, each with distinct customs, dances, and ancestral beliefs. The famadihana, or “turning of the bones,” is a traditional ceremony that celebrates the cycle of life and death through music, food, and family gatherings.
Good to know
The Malagasy ariary is the local currency. Dry season (May to October) is best for travel, though road conditions can still be rough—4x4s are often essential. Domestic flights help cover long distances on this vast island. French and Malagasy are widely spoken.
