Your Itinerary In Detail —
Syracuse & Noto
Syracuse is a city that combines architectural and cultural treasures with the charm of the ancient Sicilian countryside. Rich in Baroque architecture, the city bears witness to the splendour of Magna Graecia. Various people such as the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans have left their mark on the local culture over the centuries. Places of interest include the park of Neapolis and the island of Ortigia, the oldest part of the city.
The province is part of the beautiful Val di Noto, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose historical and architectural monuments are considered the best examples of late Baroque in Europe.
Noto is the capital of the Baroque era, with a historic centre also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, and the reconstruction produced the many masterpieces that can still be admired today.
Enter the heart of the city through the historic Porta Reale, an imposing 19th century gateway overlooking Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Along the Corso you will find precious buildings of baroque architecture such as the Church of Santa Chiara with its panoramic terrace, the Cathedral of San Nicolò, the symbol of the city, the Palace of the Princes of Nicolaci and the Palazzo Ducezio.
A few kilometres from the city, discover the Vendicari nature reserve, one of the most beautiful places in Europe to observe wildlife. With 1,500 hectares of nature, wild beaches, crystal clear waters and archaeological sites, the beaches of Eloro, Calamosche di San Lorenzo and Vendicari, dominated by the Tonnara and Torre Sveva, are not to be missed.
If you can't get enough of the Baroque, visit the following eight towns in the Val di Noto: Caltagirone, Militello in Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo, Ragusa and Scicli.
Marzamemi & Etna
Marzamemi is a small fishing village in the province of Syracuse, only a few kilometres from Pachino and the baroque town of Noto. It is one of the most charming villages in Italy with its small yellow houses and the famous Tonnara di Marzamemi. From here you can explore the Vendicari nature reserve, where you will find freshwater wetlands, salt marshes, coastal dunes and miles of beaches, and where you can see flamingos, herons and cormorants.
Next, take a trip to majestic Mount Etna, the world's most active volcano, which rises to over 3,000 metres and offers a lunar landscape of dark rocks and glowing lava. You can book a day or half-day excursion to see the various craters. Sports enthusiasts can climb to the top and see the craters at 3,300 metres.
Cavagrande & Ragusa
Cavagrande is a nature-lover's paradise, with arid rocks, canyons, marshes, gorges and natural pools. Thanks to the many caves dug into the rock, there are many traces of prehistoric times.
After being completely destroyed by an earthquake at the end of the 16th century, Ragusa was rebuilt in the Baroque style. Today, the city is divided into two settlements: Ragusa Ibla, considered the modern part, and Ragusa Superiore, located on a rock. Ragusa is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and will amaze at every turn with its rich historical past.
Taormina & Messina
Sicily, known and appreciated throughout the world, is a magical, fascinating and mysterious land. Here, breathtaking panoramas are combined with scents, flavours and colours that are unique to Italy. One of the cities that attracts the most tourists every year is Taormina, considered one of the most beautiful places in the world. The city is located on the east coast, directly on the Ionian Sea.
Known as the gateway to Sicily because of its proximity to the mainland, Messina is a must-see place on the east coast of Sicily. Visit the Cathedral, the Fountain of Orion, and take a pleasant walk through the botanical garden.
