Your Destination —
Day 1: Arrival in Iceland
On arrival at the Keflavik airport, please direct to the rent-a-car desk where you will be provided with the keys and documentation, and then you can start your trip through this majestic land.
The Blue Lagoon is also near the Keflavík Airport, so you might consider booking a visit here before you head to Hveragerði.
Enjoy a day visiting the natural gems of the Icelandic countryside. Head for the geothermal fields of Geysir, with bubbling mud pools and the regularly erupting Strokkur geyser. Then visit the dramatic, two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, a spectacular sight in winter when frozen mid-cascade. Finally, stop at UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, where the world's oldest parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland's largest lake. While in this region, perhaps you might take a relaxing spa visit to Laugarvatn Fontana Steam baths or the interesting organic geothermal greenhouses at Fríðheimar.
If you want to stay in the Hveragerði area, this town is great for outdoor recreation. You can book a guided hiking tour through a nearby multicolored geothermal area with a chance to bathe in an outdoor natural hot spring. Winter mountain biking and snowshoeing guided tours are also available.
Tonight, you might consider taking a short drive visit to Fakasel Icelandic Horse Park. Here you can enjoy the popular Legends of Sleipnir, a multi-media horse show that introduces you to the charming Icelandic horse breed and its influence on the country‘s history, mythology and folklore. After the 45-minute show, you are invited onto the stage to meet some of the equine actors. Fakasel has a friendly restaurant where you can enjoy farmhouse favorites, including traditional lamb soup and home-made bread.
Journey along the south shore follows the wintry countryside, where the ominous Hekla volcano can be seen on a clear day and where majestic mountains meet wide plains. The landscape is adorned with spectacular waterfalls, including Seljalandsfoss, where you can enjoy a unique viewpoint by walking behind the curtain of thundering water.
Head on to Vik, a village perched on the edge of a magnificent black-sand beach. From the beaches, you can see surreal basalt columns said to be the remains of trolls frozen in place by the rising sun. Vik is also well known for its woollen handicrafts, which you can check out at the Vikurprjon shop.
The nearby Myrdalsjökull glacier) has good opportunities for snowmobile tours.
Day 4 or 5 (if an extra night is added)
Drive to Keflavík airport for your flight back home. Drop off your car at Keflavík airport. Please remember to give yourself enough time. You should check in for your flight no later than 2 hours before departure.
