Lava tunnel tour

Optional excursions

Visit the lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir and witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while you walk in the path of a lava that flowed thousands of years ago.

On this adventure, we visit the lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir located only 30 minutes from Reykjavík. The lava tunnel is one of the biggest in Iceland and gets up to 30 metres wide and 10 metres high. The lava tube ceiling has caved in near the entrance, which creates beautiful columns of light. The fantastic range of colours of the tunnel wall is caused by the different mineral types of the rock.

This is a tour for the senses. Experience a new world, hear the talk of the cave and sense the forces of nature like you have never done before. Learn new things and step out of your comfort zone. Scenes from the Hollywood movie Noah, with Anthony Hopkins, were shot in this lava cave. You walk around 350 metres into the lava tunnel and the temperature in the cave is around 4 degrees, although it can be warmer outside and usually water leaks from the ceiling when it rains and snows, so we recommend raincoats.

Reykjavik

Reykjavík, the world’s northernmost capital, blends small-town charm with striking natural beauty and a creative urban soul. Framed by snow-capped mountains and the vast North Atlantic, this colourful city feels both peaceful and alive - where Nordic design, geothermal energy and vibrant nightlife coexist in perfect balance. Whether you’re here to explore the island’s wild landscapes or unwind in a geothermal spa, Reykjavík offers a truly unique gateway to Iceland.

Must-sees:

  • Hallgrímskirkja Church: The city’s iconic landmark, whose tower offers panoramic views across Reykjavík’s rooftops and surrounding fjords.
  • Laugavegur Street: Reykjavík’s lively main artery, filled with designer boutiques, cosy cafés and buzzing bars.
  • Harpa Concert Hall: A striking glass building inspired by Icelandic basalt columns, home to concerts and cultural events.
  • Sun Voyager Sculpture: A gleaming steel ode to exploration, perfectly placed for sunset photos along the waterfront.
  • Golden Circle Excursion: Venture beyond the city to see Þingvellir National Park, Geysir, and Gullfoss, Iceland’s most famous waterfall.

Culinary culture:

Reykjavík’s dining scene celebrates Iceland’s pure ingredients and creative flair. Try rye bread baked in geothermal steam, topped with smoked trout or pickled herring, or sample Icelandic lamb and fresh Arctic char. For something sweet, taste kleina (twisted doughnuts) with rich Icelandic coffee. In the evening, enjoy innovative Nordic cuisine at one of the city’s acclaimed restaurants or sip a craft beer while listening to live music in a cosy bar.

Dive deeper:

Beyond its landmarks, Reykjavík reveals a playful, artistic side. Explore the city’s vibrant street art, visit the Reykjavík Art Museum, or relax at the Sky Lagoon overlooking the ocean. In winter, chase the Northern Lights dancing across the Arctic sky; in summer, stroll under the endless glow of the midnight sun. From whale-watching tours in Faxaflói Bay to thermal bathing in nearby hot springs, Reykjavík is as much an experience as a destination - where nature and culture blend seamlessly.

Good to know:

Reykjavík is about 45 minutes from Keflavík International Airport, with regular airport shuttles to the city centre. The best time to visit depends on what you seek - May to September for mild weather and long daylight hours, or October to March for the Northern Lights. The local currency is the Icelandic króna (ISK).
