Your Destinations —
Reykjavik
Laugavegur is the beating heart of the city, a street brimming with bars, restaurants, and boutique shops - stop by one of the cosy cafes to try Icelandic favourites like rye bread with toppings like herring or trout, If you’re looking to soak up some culture, visit the Reykjavik Art Museum to see modern art by Icelandic artists, or the National Museum of Iceland to dive into the city’s Viking roots.
Of course, Reykjavik is also the ideal starting point to discover the wild landscapes of this stunning island. As you venture towards the west, explore the popular Golden Circle - A total must-see for any person travelling to Iceland for the first time! The three famous locations on the Golden Circle route represent some of Iceland‘s most fascinating geological forces: they are Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall and Þingvellir National Park.
The biggest attraction of the area today is the mighty Strokkur, an active Geysir which shoots a large column of boiling water into the air several times every hour. During your stop at Geysir, you can purchase refreshments with five different restaurants to choose from. The awe-inspiring Gullfoss is a massive three-step waterfall which is part of the glacial River Hvítá. Water plummets into a dramatic canyon with incredible force reminding us of the true power of nature. A sunny day will transform our “Golden Waterfall” as light reflects from the mist and creates beautiful rainbows. The rugged and spectacular landscape at Þingvellir National Park lies in a broad valley surrounded by majestic cliffs. This fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site is significant as the only dry location marking the meeting place of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates and the gathering spot of oldest parliament in the world, Alþingi.
Western Iceland
Hraunfossar - or “Lava Falls” is a series of beautiful waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming out from the Hallmundarhraun lava field. Clear, cold springs of subterranean water seep through the lava and run as tiny waterfalls and rapids into the Hvita River. Barnafoss translates as “Children’s Waterfall”, this name comes from the tragic story of two children who fell from a natural bridge which once spanned the waterfall.
Next, you could venture in the footsteps of the Vikings as your knowledgeable guide familiarises you with important places mentioned in the medieval Icelandic Sagas. Your journey takes us through spectacular landscape along the way to Reykholt, a renowned historical site where some of the finest works of Old Icelandic literature were written.
Stop in at Snorrastofa, the Reykholt Cultural and Medieval Center, founded in memory of Snorri Sturluson, Iceland’s best-known Saga writer and scholar. The centre is situated in Snorri’s ancient homestead and is considered one of Iceland’s most noteworthy historical sites.
Fascinating insights into the history of Icelandic settlement and the Saga Era could be next at Landnámssetur, the Icelandic Settlement Center exhibitions in Borgarnes. The exhibitions recreate the captivating drama of the sagas and the birth of this island nation. They also bring to life one of Iceland’s most important cultural treasures, Egils Saga.
Why not fill your time with an extraordinary adventure as you head for Iceland’s second largest glacier, Langjökull. Explore the glacier from the inside, and see the spectacular “blue ice” which is buried deep beneath the surface.
There is also the luxurious geothermal spa Krauma - or “simmer” in English. Here, you can soak in the wonderfully hot water - a long-held Icelandic tradition. Krauma offers five relaxing geothermal baths, a cold tub to get your blood circulation going, two calming saunas and a relaxation room where you can rest by the fireplace while listening to soothing music.
