Reykjavik Sightseeing - Elfin Folklore - Unique Waterfall Duo
Discover first-hand the colorful capital of Reykjavik with a sightseeing tour experiencing the city’s energetic vibe through top visitor attractions like the visually stunning Harpa Concert Hall and Parliament on bustling Austurvollur Square while enjoying panoramic views from the city’s main landmark, Hallgrimskirkja church. We uncover a wonderful mix of old and new exploring the Scandinavian charms preserved in colorful buildings of the old town center, and the modernity of the trendy downtown harbor district.
Traveling northwest via tunnel through Hvalfjordur we head to the friendly town of Akranes to visit the local museum center which preserves a comprehensive collection of geology and maritime exhibits. Afterwards we climb to the top of a lighthouse to enjoy spectacular views of the wild coastline. We experience a bit of Iceland’s unique folklore at Fossatun Troll Gardens where we hike along the Troll Trail dotted with informative signs, ogress statues and feats of strength set along the magnificent backdrop of Troll Falls and Grimsa River. Onwards to the bubbling waters of Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring which provides heating for most of the homes and businesses in the area. We nourish our thirst for culture in Reykholt, which holds an important role as the home of renowned Icelandic Saga writer and medieval scholar Snorri Sturluson. The day ends with a scenic visit to a duo of exceptionally beautiful and unique waterfalls at Hraunfoss and Barnafoss which each have a mysterious secret to reveal. Evening Northern Lights Hunt: Due to our location in West Iceland away from light pollution we are in a prime position to hunt the luminescent green light show Vikings believed were the Valkyries riding across the sky.
Overnight at Icelandair Hotel Hamar in Borgarnes. Included: Entrance fee to Museum Center in Akranes.
Boat Tour - Snaefellsnes National Park & Glacier
From the delightful town of Stykkisholmur embark on an adventurous sail in Breidafjordur Bay (UNESCO) to encounter thousands of tiny islands and experience “Viking Sushi,” a sampling of sea scallops, urchin, and crab drawn onto the boat straight from the refreshing Icelandic waters.
Along the rugged coastline of Snaefellsnes Peninsula we encounter hidden away fishing villages like Grundarfjordur with its landmark Kirkjufell Mountain and surrounding fjord teeming with herring and orca whales, and Hellnar with a year-round population of less than ten residents, as well as the picturesque harbor village of Arnarstapi to walk among the columnar basalt rock formation and mighty sea cliffs. Throughout the day we enjoy the remote tranquility of Snaefellsnes National Park which exhibits an astonishing variety in natural landscapes from moss blanketed lava fields and pebbled beaches to imposing cliffs and the palpable force of Snaefellsjokull glacier-volcano which last erupted in 250 AD.
Evening Northern Lights Hunt: If weather conditions the night before were unfavorable we hunt again for the elusive Aurora Borealis. Ideal meteorological conditions include a clear sky with icy temperatures and preferably no moon.
Overnight at Icelandair Hotel Hamar in Borgarnes.
Included:Boat tour with Viking-sushi tasting
Iceland’s Golden Circle showcases a trio of celebrated natural attractions including the dramatic Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermal fields of Geysir Hot Spring Area alive with boiling mud pits, steam vents, and exploding geysers.
The Golden Circle's centerpiece is UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, where Viking settlers established an assembly in AD 930 which has evolved into the world’s oldest parliament today. Thingvellir also holds geological significance, as it marks the visible site of the mid-Atlantic Ridge where the North American and Eurasian continental plates meet.
Along our route through the fertile countryside we slow down to enjoy some local flavors at Efstidalur dairy farm which specializes in homemade skyr, an organic, hormone-free Greek-style yogurt that has been enjoyed as a breakfast staple and dessert treat in Iceland since Viking Saga times.
Our journey continues to Hveragerdi, the charming gateway town to South Iceland set in a highly active geothermal area where pillars of steam rise up from the ground year round. Hveragerdi has the highest concentration of greenhouses in Iceland where residents provide the country with much of its home grown produce, including exotic varieties like papayas and bananas. In the evenings the greenhouses are lit up giving the town of Hveragerdi a distinctive glow.
We will end the day by visting Fakasel Horse Park, were we will enjoy a unique performance in the country’s only “horse theatre”.
Overnight at Hotel Örk in Hveragerdi.
Included: Visit to an Icelandic farm and a taste of homemade skyr yogurt, ice cream and meat, visit to Fakasel horse riding centre for a “horse theatre” performance, an amazing 45-minute show in a unique environment.
Reykjanes Seacoast - Blue Lagoon - Reykjavik
Travelling along the breathtaking seacoast of Reykjanes Peninsula we visit Strandarkirkja, a small wooden church popularly believed to radiate special powers for increased luck and success. Although the church is typical of rural Iceland, it is built directly into the coast, and offers amazing views of the turbulent ocean meeting volcanic rocks and black sands. Look for a quaint set of painted elf houses tucked in the churchyard grounds. We then drive to Lake Kleifarvatn, set in fascinating, stark, moonlike surroundings. Near the lake’s southern end lies Krysuvik bubbling springs, where powerful jets of steam escape from deep below the earth’s crust and sulphurous steam rises from numerous vents of a geothermal field. Here we can see innumerable small hot springs, mud pots, boiling pools and other types of geothermal activity. We proceed along the shore to stop by craggy cliffs rising sheer from the sea, to the town of Grindavik, which boasts a sizeable fishing fleet. After a lunch stop in Grindavik we approach the Blue Lagoon.
We end our sightseeing with a visit to the world-renowned Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. It is set in a black lava field and is filled with pleasantly warm mineral-rich seawater, which provides the ultimate interaction and relaxation with Iceland’s raw nature. A dip in the lagoon is not included but optional.
Guests who choose to purchase bathing access can also enjoy a sauna with lagoon views, a cosy steam bath carved into a lava cave, and a warm waterfall that provides an energising massage. Be on the lookout for white buckets located throughout the lagoon; these contain the famous silica mud, an essential part of the spa experience. Return to Reykjavik where the evening is at your own leisure.
