Your Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik

DAY 1 - UK - REYKJAVIK

Arrival at Keflavik International Airport, where you’ll be able to collect your vehicle (service not included). Depending on the time you arrive, visit Sandgerdi Lighthouse, close to the international airport, or begin your exploration of the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik. This charming city has great cultural sites to visit including the intriguing Hallgrimskirkja Church, the very lively Laugavegur Street, and architectural masterpiece, the Harpa Centre.

Overnight at Hotel Cabin or similar in Reykjavik.

DAY 2 - REYKJAVIK - GOLDEN CIRCLE - SELFOSS (approx. 185 km)

Breakfast at the hotel.

Leave for your sightseeing tour of the Golden Circle: Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall. Start with Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its historical, cultural and geological significance, and its Oxarafoss Waterfall.

On the road to the Geysir geothermal area is the Fontana geothermal bakery in Laugarvatn.

Your ticket can be booked and paid for onsite, giving you access to the bakery and the thermal baths. Head to the region of geysers and marvel at the active Strokkur geyser, before continuing onto your hotel.

Along the way, you’ll be able to visit the Fridheimar geothermal greenhouse and equestrian centre, Faxi Waterfall, and the impressive multi-coloured volcanic crater lake, Kerid. Tickets for these three sites can be paid for onsite.

Overnight at Hotel Selfoss & Spa 4* or similar.

Day 3 - SELFOSS - SOUTH COAST (approx. 250 km)

DAY 3 - SELFOSS - SOUTH COAST (approx. 250 km)

Breakfast at the hotel.

Depart for Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, a majestic waterfall with a drop of 60 metres. Weather permitting, you can walk behind the waterfall, admiring it from every angle. Continue to the Arjarnufoss Waterfalls, close to Skogafoss. Route 1 will lead you to the Solheimajokull Glacier, with a wealth of dramatic ice formations.

Your last stop will be the famous black sand beach of Reynisfjara and its majestic basalt columns. The contrast of colours is particularly striking in Winter in this region. On the road leading to your hotel, you’ll pass the charming little village Vik, where you can admire its church or visit shops selling traditional Icelandic woollen clothing and accessories, renowned for their warmth and resistance to such cold temperatures.

Overnight in the south of the island, at Fosshotel Nupar or similar.

DAY 4 - SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK - FJALLSARLON AND JOKULSARLON LAGOONS (approx. 310 km)

Breakfast at the hotel.

Leave to explore Skaftafell National Park and Skaftafellsjökull. Visiting the park in Winter offers the amazing opportunity to see the glacier tongue extending across the landscape. Although surrounded by glaciers, the park is among the least snow-affected regions in Iceland due to southerly winds.

One of the most majestic places in the park is the Svartifoss Waterfall. Follow the marked trail for a one-hour hike, leading you to the waterfall, framed by basalt columns.

Returning to Route 1 East, you’ll pass the small Hofskirkja Church, one of the last remaining green-roofed churches in Iceland. During summer and fall (until around the end of October) you can hike through the Múlagljúfur Canyon. Its unmarked trails will transport you to another world. Don't forget your crampons and hiking boots!

Continue onto the famous lagoons of the Vatnajökull, Fjallsarlon, and Jökulsarlon glaciers, where you’ll see more majestic icebergs, before heading back west to reach your hotel.

Overnight at Hotel Dyrholaey or similar.

Day 5 - SOUTH COAST - REYKJANES PENINSULA - REYKJAVIK (approx. 305 km)

DAY 5 - SOUTH COAST - REYKJANES PENINSULA - REYKJAVIK (approx. 305 km)

Breakfast at the hotel.

Visit the small village of Hveragerdi, known for its geothermal activity and hot steam emanating from the ground. Next up is the Reykjanes Peninsula, where forces of nature collide to produce an expanse of flowing lava, volcanic cones and craters. Continue onto the region of Krisuvik.

Head to the Gunnuhver geothermal area, where steam and gasses known as fumaroles arise from the earth’s crust, known as fumaroles. Admire the meeting of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, at the bridge between the continents. Continue to Reykjavik for a panoramic city tour and free time to enjoy this charming city.

Night at Hotel Cabin or similar.

DAY 6 - REYKJAVIK - UK (approx. 50 km)
