Your destination —
Mykonos
Welcome to Mykonos, one of Greece’s most iconic islands, known for its stunning skyline of windmills and whitewashed houses. Beyond the picturesque beauty lies a vibrant destination where you can experience both lively cosmopolitan energy and peaceful escapes. The island's capital, Chora, is a maze of charming cobbled streets lined with chic restaurants, stylish bars, and bustling nightlife. Yet, just a short distance away, you'll discover tranquil beaches and unspoiled towns along its 80km coastline.
Must-sees:
- Lia Beach: Located just 12 km from Chora, this secluded beach offers crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and relaxing in a peaceful setting.
- Kalafati Beach: A larger beach ideal for water sports enthusiasts, offering everything from windsurfing to jet-skiing, with ample space to soak up the sun.
- Armenistis Lighthouse: Situated at the northern tip of the island, this lighthouse offers panoramic views and is the perfect spot to watch a spectacular sunset over the Aegean Sea.
Culinary culture:
Mykonos is a culinary haven, offering an exciting blend of traditional Greek flavours and fresh seafood. Try local specialities such as kebab, moussaka, and the island’s famous Mykonian cheese. Enjoy dining in the open-air tavernas by the sea, where you can taste grilled octopus, souvlaki, and refreshing Greek salads with the freshest ingredients. Pair your meal with local wines or the famed Greek spirit, ouzo.
Dive deeper:
Mykonos offers more than just beaches and nightlife. For a taste of its heritage, visit the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos to see fascinating ancient artefacts, or take a boat trip to the nearby island of Delos, one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites. The island is also renowned for its vibrant art scene, with galleries showcasing the work of local and international artists.
Good to know:
Mykonos enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers (June to September) and mild winters. The island is well-connected, with ferries available from Athens, and offers a range of accommodations from luxury resorts to charming boutique hotels. The official language is Greek, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
Naxos
Naxos is located in the South Aegean and the largest island of the Cyclades. The island boasts a stunning green landscape as well as striking mountains, lovely beaches and quaint villages.
There are several archaeological sites throughout the island that showcase its rich history. The most notable is the Portara, the remaining gate of an ancient temple dedicated to the Greek God Apollo.
Walk around the main town of Chora to admire the Venetian and traditional Cycladic architecture. The Kastro (castle) is a Venetian structure that once served as a protective shield for the town and which you can visit today. Head to the coastline and soak in the sun on one of the sandy or pebbled beaches.
The island is not as well-known as its neighbours, making it so that you never find overcrowded beaches. If you wish for a Greecian holiday on the Aegean but without the fuss, this is the perfect destination.
Santorini
Santorini, the jewel of the Aegean, is renowned for its whitewashed villages perched atop dramatic volcanic cliffs. Shaped by a massive eruption in the 17th century BC, this island offers an unparalleled blend of natural beauty, history, and culture.
Must-sees:
- Oia village: Wander through iconic white houses and blue-domed churches, and savour panoramic views of the caldera.
- Fira: Santorini’s vibrant capital blends stunning vistas with cosmopolitan energy, offering excellent dining and nightlife options.
- Akrotiri Archaeological Site: Discover the preserved ruins of an ancient Minoan settlement, frozen in time by volcanic ash.
Culinary culture:
Santorini’s cuisine celebrates fresh, local ingredients. Savour fava bean puree, tomato keftedes, and white aubergine dishes that highlight the island’s unique produce. Pair your meal with Assyrtiko wine, a crisp white varietal cultivated in Santorini’s volcanic soil. For dessert, indulge in a honey-soaked baklava or loukoumades.
A dive deeper:
Escape the crowds by exploring Santorini’s lesser-known gems. Pyrgos, a quaint village with narrow lanes and authentic tavernas, offers a glimpse of traditional island life. The hike from Fira to Oia showcases the caldera’s breathtaking landscapes and is a must for outdoor enthusiasts. Alternatively, visit the black-sand beaches of Perissa and Kamari for a tranquil seaside retreat.
Good to know:
The local currency is the euro (€), and the best months to visit are May through October for warm weather and clear skies. Local buses connect major villages, while rental cars or scooters provide flexibility for exploring further afield. Comfortable footwear is essential for navigating the island’s steep paths and rugged trails.
