Your destination —
Mykonos
Naxos
Naxos, the largest island in the Cyclades, captures the essence of the Greek Aegean with its blend of history, charm and natural beauty. Greener and more mountainous than its neighbours, the island offers a captivating mix of golden beaches, fertile valleys and traditional whitewashed villages where time seems to slow.
Must-sees:
- Portara of Naxos: The iconic marble gate of an unfinished temple dedicated to Apollo, standing proudly at the island’s entrance.
- Chora (Naxos Town): Wander through narrow alleys of Cycladic and Venetian architecture, climb up to the Kastro, and take in views across the harbour.
- Temple of Demeter: A well-preserved 6th-century BC sanctuary nestled among rolling hills.
- Beaches of Agios Prokopios and Plaka: Long stretches of soft sand and turquoise waters, perfect for swimming and relaxing.
Culinary culture:
Naxos is famed for its local produce and authentic Greek flavours. Taste arseniko cheese, made from goat’s milk, or enjoy lamb slow-cooked with herbs from the mountains. Pair your meal with citron liqueur, the island’s signature spirit, and end with honey-drizzled baklava or galaktoboureko. Many tavernas source ingredients directly from the island’s farms, ensuring every dish bursts with freshness.
Dive deeper:
Beyond its beaches, Naxos reveals a more authentic Greece. Explore mountain villages like Apiranthos and Filoti, where marble-paved streets, local crafts and traditional cafés showcase everyday island life. Hike up Mount Zas, the mythical childhood home of Zeus, or visit ancient olive presses and Byzantine churches scattered through the countryside. In the evening, watch the sun set behind the Portara, one of the most magical sights in the Aegean.
Good to know:
Naxos is easily reached by ferry from Athens (around 5 hours) or by plane to Naxos Island National Airport. The best time to visit is from May to October, when the weather is warm and the sea inviting, yet the island remains less crowded than its famous neighbours. The local currency is the euro (EUR).
Santorini
Santorini, the jewel of the Aegean, is renowned for its whitewashed villages perched atop dramatic volcanic cliffs. Shaped by a massive eruption in the 17th century BC, this island offers an unparalleled blend of natural beauty, history, and culture.
Must-sees:
- Oia village: Wander through iconic white houses and blue-domed churches, and savour panoramic views of the caldera.
- Fira: Santorini’s vibrant capital blends stunning vistas with cosmopolitan energy, offering excellent dining and nightlife options.
- Akrotiri Archaeological Site: Discover the preserved ruins of an ancient Minoan settlement, frozen in time by volcanic ash.
Culinary culture:
Santorini’s cuisine celebrates fresh, local ingredients. Savour fava bean puree, tomato keftedes, and white aubergine dishes that highlight the island’s unique produce. Pair your meal with Assyrtiko wine, a crisp white varietal cultivated in Santorini’s volcanic soil. For dessert, indulge in a honey-soaked baklava or loukoumades.
A dive deeper:
Escape the crowds by exploring Santorini’s lesser-known gems. Pyrgos, a quaint village with narrow lanes and authentic tavernas, offers a glimpse of traditional island life. The hike from Fira to Oia showcases the caldera’s breathtaking landscapes and is a must for outdoor enthusiasts. Alternatively, visit the black-sand beaches of Perissa and Kamari for a tranquil seaside retreat.
Good to know:
The local currency is the euro (€), and the best months to visit are May through October for warm weather and clear skies. Local buses connect major villages, while rental cars or scooters provide flexibility for exploring further afield. Comfortable footwear is essential for navigating the island’s steep paths and rugged trails.
