Inaugurated in 1875 and named in honor of its young architect Charles Garnier, it is the largest opera house in Paris. 'Europe. Imagine the rustling of crinolines as you admire the breathtaking decor and stroll through vast foyers filled with glittering mosaics, colorful marble columns and gold leaf flowers. Everywhere you look will be a feast for the eyes.

From October 24 to February 2, discover the exhibition Grand Opera, 1828-1867. History made spectacular. On the eve of the Revolution of 1830, the great opera house, in gestation since the time of the consulate, established itself as the new genre of opera. Employing considerable technical and human resources - a large choir, a ballet and an orchestra - it continued in the tradition of the grandiose initiated under Louis XIV. He also moved away from it: from ancient mythology, romantic French opera turned to historical frescoes from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Louis-Philippe's France wanted to erase the humiliation of Waterloo and the Treaty of Vienna and discovered a passion for History, its own History.

While Ludovic Vitet became the first general inspector of historic monuments and Victor Hugo published Notre-Dame de Paris, Robert le Diable and Les Huguenots were born. The heroes of the great opera were no longer Thésée or Proserpine, but the Duke of Normandy and Marguerite de Valois. Sometimes, an almost contemporary past is invited on the scene: in Gustave III, Auber and Scribe told the story of the assassination of the King of Sweden, which took place in 1792, barely forty years earlier. testify to the immense enthusiasm aroused by the great French opera.

Even if this passion faded somewhat during the Revolution of 1848, some great masterpieces were still produced under the Second Republic and the Second Empire. But there were upheavals on the horizon, and Wagner was going to disrupt the festivities with Tannhäuser, performed in Paris in 1861. On August 15, 1867, six months after the partial failure of Don Carlos at Peletier, the facade of the Palais Garnier was unveiled. . A new era has apparently opened, which will soon be disrupted by the Sedan disaster.
