Carcassonne
Arguably the most picture-perfect medieval city in France, Carcassonne is dominated by its incredible walled fortress, the Cité de Carcassonne, which can be dated back to the Gallo-Roman period. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the original walled city boasts 52 towers and 2 enclosures, spanning over 3 kilometres. Perched on top of a hill, this postcard-worthy city also boasts incredible views of the surrounding Languedoc region.
Travellers with an interest in history, architecture, and classic Languedoc cuisine will feel right at home in Carcassonne. It’s possible to spend all day wandering the streets of La Cité, where you can admire the Castle of the Counts - the former residence of the master of the city - and the Basilica of St Nazaire and Celsus, once blessed by Pope Urban II on a visit to the city in 1096.
When you’re done immersing yourself in the magical streets of the medieval city, take a wander through the newer lower city, built in the 13th century outside the walls of the original fortress. Here, you’ll find authentic restaurants less catered to tourists, and the Musee des Beaux-Arts, home to European art from the 17th century onwards.
