Your destination

Havana

Havana, a vibrant city on the Caribbean island of Cuba, offers a colourful blend of history, culture, and rhythm. Known for its eclectic architecture, including Baroque, neoclassical, and Art Deco styles, Havana entices visitors with lively cafés, rumba music, and a captivating atmosphere. Its UNESCO World Heritage sites, beautiful seafront promenades, and rich cultural traditions make it an unforgettable destination.

Must-sees:

  • Old Havana (Habana Vieja): A UNESCO World Heritage Site, with cobblestone streets, colonial-era plazas, and iconic landmarks such as the Cathedral of Havana and Plaza de Armas.
  • Malecón: Stroll along this famous seafront promenade, offering a perfect introduction to Havana’s vibrant street life and ocean breeze.
  • El Capitolio: This grand building, modelled after the U.S. Capitol, is a symbol of Havana’s architectural heritage and houses Cuba’s National Assembly.

Culinary culture:

Havana’s culinary offerings are a fusion of traditional Cuban flavours and modern influences. Ropa vieja, a shredded beef dish in a tomato-based sauce, and moros y cristianos, rice with black beans, are local favourites. For seafood enthusiasts, lobster cooked in garlic and butter is a must-try. Be sure to enjoy a freshly made mojito or daiquiri at iconic bars such as La Bodeguita del Medio or El Floridita, where these cocktails were born.

Dive deeper:

Beyond its well-known landmarks, Havana reveals its deeper soul through hidden gems. Visit Fábrica de Arte Cubano, a cultural centre in a repurposed industrial space, offering contemporary art, live performances, and a lively nightlife. Explore Callejón de Hamel, a colourful alley reflecting Afro-Cuban culture, or take a vintage car ride through the Miramar district, where grand mansions showcase Havana’s pre-revolutionary charm.

Good to know:

The official currency is the Cuban Peso (CUP), although the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC) is commonly used by tourists. The dry season from November to April is the ideal time to visit. Getting around is easy, with options including vintage taxis, bicycle rickshaws, and almendrón shared taxis, a convenient and affordable way to explore Havana’s charm.

Cayo Santa Maria

Welcome to Cayo Santa Maria where you can relax 100%. This small island, located about 5 hours by car from Havana, is part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago, which has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and is a true paradise.

  • Los Flamencos Sanctuary: This sanctuary is home to a very large population of flamingos. It's a great spot to bird watch and admire these beautiful creatures.

Culinary culture:

Cayo Santa Maria, like the rest of Cuba, focuses on fresh natural ingredients and traditional cuban flavours. The food is greatly influenced by African, Spanish, and Caribbean cuisine. The highlights included fresh seafood such as lobster, shrimp, and different types of fish. You can also find dishes like Ropa Vieja, an iconic Cuban dish made of shredded beed simmered in a tomato based sauce with onions, peppers, and spices. Finally, the Cuban Sandwich is another staple, it’s made with roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, all sandwiched between Cuban bread.

To dive deeper into Cayo Santa Maria's beautiful culture, explore its iconic coral reef that circles around the island. This stunning coral barrier reef is the second largest in the world. Take a diving or snorkeling adventure and discover the beautiful system.

Good to know:

Cuba uses two main currencies, the Cuban Peso (CUP) and the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC), though CUC is beginning to fade out of use.
