Monastir —
Monastir, on Tunisia’s sunlit Gulf of Hammamet, blends golden beaches with centuries of history. Framed by olive groves and turquoise waters, this coastal city is both a seaside escape and a cultural gem, where tradition and modernity meet under the Mediterranean sun.
Must-sees:
- Ribat of Monastir: A striking 8th-century fortress overlooking the sea, one of the best-preserved Islamic monuments in North Africa.
- Habib Bourguiba Mausoleum: A grand memorial to Tunisia’s first president, crowned with golden domes and intricate mosaics.
- Monastir Medina: Wander through narrow alleys filled with souks, handicrafts and echoes of the city’s past.
- Marina of Monastir: A lively harbour with restaurants, cafés and views over the bay.
Culinary culture:
Monastir’s cuisine reflects the richness of Tunisia’s Mediterranean coast. Savour freshly grilled fish, brik (a thin pastry filled with egg and tuna), or couscous with fragrant spices. Round off with local pastries such as baklava or makroud, best enjoyed with a glass of mint tea.
Dive deeper:
Beyond the beaches, explore the archaeological site of Lamnin, or take an excursion to El Jem, home to one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the world. Discover traditional villages inland, where olive oil production remains central to local life. For a touch of adventure, try diving in the clear waters off the coast or sailing along the Gulf of Hammamet.
Good to know:
Monastir is served by Habib Bourguiba International Airport, just 9 km from the city centre. The best time to visit is from April to October, when the Mediterranean is warm and the city at its most vibrant. The local currency is the Tunisian dinar (TND).
