Depart for a 1h30 drive through the rural outskirts of Bangkok to Ayutthaya, the former capital of the Thai kingdom for 417 years. Founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, its destruction by the Burmese army in 1767 led to the collapse of the kingdom.
The ruins of all the most important buildings have been consolidated, repaired and sometimes rebuilt, giving visitors a glimpse of its former splendour. The Bang Pa-In Summer Palace, built in the 17th century and restored by King Rama V, is an incredible blend of European, Chinese and Thai architecture.

Start the day with a transfer to Banteay Srei ‘The citadel of women’, the only major temple not built by a monarch.
