Today you can choose to have a free day in Bangkok or take an optional excursion. We recommend that you enjoy a ride on the charismatic long-tailed boats to experience daily life along the river, or, visit the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Gaew, two of the most important temples in Thailand. Those who wish to go shopping in the city should visit the main shopping district of Siam Square. Here you will find plenty of gifts, souvenirs, and clothing at bargain prices.
Overnight in Bangkok. Breakfast included.
Today this remarkable tour will cover palaces, ancient ruins, temples, and monkeys, as you travel through the north of Thailand. After departing the hotel, we will arrive at Bang Pa-In to visit the lavish Summer Palace of Rama V.
We will then continue to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya and explore the magnificent temples of Wat Yai Chaimongkhon, Wat Mahathat, and Wat Phanan Choeng at the Ayutthaya Historical Park. We will enjoy lunch at a restaurant in Chai Nat and continue to Phitsanulok for a short tour of the city before arriving at your hotel.
Overnight in Phitsanuylok. Lunch included.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will head to Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat to join the locals in their morning prayers and offerings. This historic temple is home to one of the most revered Buddha statues in Thailand, dating back to the 14th Century. Our next destination will be Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of ancient monuments, palace ruins, and fascinating Buddha statues of varying shapes and sizes.
Lunch at a local restaurant. A short drive will take us to Si Satchanalai, a historical park that contains the ruins of 11th Century Khmer monuments and sanctuaries. This traffic free park is a quiet location that offers a special spiritual interlude. We will then continue our journey to the popular town of Lampang.
Night in Lampang. Breakfast and lunch included.
Explore the wonderful Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, just a short walk from Lampang, and marvel at its elaborate decorations and beautiful Buddha statues. We continue north and stop at Phayao Lake for a rest. We journey onwards towards the southern outskirts of Chiang Rai to visit Wat Rong Khun, commonly known as the White Temple. Constructed in the 1990s, this artistic temple boasts a distinct white exterior with inlaid glass that makes it sparkle in the sunshine.
Continue to Chiang Rai for lunch. In the afternoon we will venture towards the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. This natural desert gained an unwanted notoriety in the 1960s due to the abundance of opium cultivation in the area. We will visit the House of Opium Museum and stroll through its rare collection of opium related artefacts including weights, knives, scales, and pipes. Here you can learn about the history of opium in Thailand and the devastating effect that the trade had on local communities.
Accommodation in Chiang Rai. Breakfast and lunch included.
Wake up early and enjoy the alluring aromas of the Chiang Rai markets before visiting the Wat Phra Kaew temple, home to the Emerald Buddha. The trip out of town continues aboard a long tail boat with a scenic cruise along the Mae Kok River to Pha Tai, where we will visit a hill tribe village.
We will continue by road to Tha Ton and enjoy a delicious lunch before heading to the ancient city of Chiang Mai. Upon arrival in Chiang Mai, we will visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a sacred temple located on top of a mountain. To reach the temple you can climb a 309-step staircase or take a cable car (included). Upon making it to the top you will be rewarded with spectacular city views.
Accommodation in Chiang Mai. Breakfast and lunch included.
Now that we have experienced the fascinating architecture of Chiang Mai, it will be time to get a little closer to nature and discover the nearby jungles. We will visit the Thai Elephant Care Centre, a sanctuary for retired elephants where you can learn all about their nature, traits, talents, and charms. Depending on the time of the visit you may also get to observe these gentle giants during their bath time. Lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon we will visit the Colour Factory, home to a selection of brightly decorated elephant statues inspired by cities around the world. You will also learn about Asian elephants and the work that the Asian Elephant Foundation is doing to save these endangered animals. Accommodation in Chiang Mai.
Breakfast and lunch included.
