Stockholm

Set across 14 islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea, Stockholm is a city shaped by water, nature and understated Scandinavian elegance. Often described as one of Europe’s most harmonious capitals, it blends serene green spaces with striking contemporary design and centuries of royal history.

Must-sees:

  • Gamla Stan: One of Europe’s best-preserved medieval old towns, filled with colourful façades, winding lanes and atmospheric squares.
  • The Royal Palace: One of the largest palaces in Europe, home to museums, state apartments and royal ceremonial halls.
  • Vasa Museum: A world-unique maritime museum showcasing the perfectly preserved 17th-century warship Vasa.
  • Djurgården: A green island home to museums, parks, walking trails and historic residences.
  • Monteliusvägen: A scenic clifftop walkway offering magnificent sunset views over the city and Lake Mälaren.

Culinary culture:

The gastronomy of Stockholm reflects Sweden’s pure, seasonal flavours. Enjoy dishes such as cured salmon, herring, meatballs with lingonberries or creamy seafood stews served by the water’s edge. Trendy neighbourhood eateries specialise in modern Nordic cuisine, while local bakeries tempt visitors with warm cinnamon buns and cardamom pastries. Cafés and restaurants across Gamla Stan and Södermalm emphasise fresh ingredients, minimalist presentation and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

Dive deeper:

Beyond the iconic sights, Stockholm offers a rich tapestry of experiences. Explore boutique design shops in Östermalm, unwind in traditional Swedish saunas, or take a boat trip through the tranquil Stockholm Archipelago — a scattering of thousands of islands stretching into the Baltic. Art and culture enthusiasts can visit cutting-edge galleries, while nature lovers will appreciate the city’s abundance of lakeside parks and forests. Whether in winter’s soft twilight or summer’s long golden evenings, Stockholm reveals a unique charm in every season.

Good to know:

Stockholm is served by Stockholm Arlanda Airport, located about 40 minutes from the city centre by train or car. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the weather is mild and daylight hours are long, although winter offers magical snowy scenery and cosy indoor culture. The local currency is the Swedish krona (SEK).

Tallinn

Set on the shores of the Baltic Sea, Tallinn is a captivating capital where medieval charm meets Nordic creativity. Renowned for its remarkably preserved Old Town, the city offers a journey through centuries of history, with cobbled streets, Gothic spires and merchant houses that seem untouched by time. Beyond its historic core, Tallinn reveals a modern, dynamic identity shaped by design, technology and a vibrant cultural scene.

  • Tallinn Old Town: A UNESCO-listed district of pedestrian streets, medieval buildings and lively squares.
  • Toompea Castle: A historic stronghold overlooking the city, now home to Estonia’s Parliament.
  • Alexander Nevsky Cathedral: An ornate Orthodox cathedral dominating the Upper Town skyline.
  • Town Hall Square: The heart of the Lower Town, surrounded by colourful merchant houses.
  • Tallinn City Walls: Well-preserved fortifications offering panoramic views and a glimpse into the past.

Culinary culture:

Tallinn’s cuisine reflects a blend of Nordic and Baltic influences. Traditional dishes feature hearty ingredients such as rye bread, smoked fish and seasonal vegetables, while contemporary restaurants reinterpret local flavours with modern techniques. Cosy cafés and historic taverns provide warm, atmospheric settings, especially during the colder months.

Dive deeper:

Beyond its medieval streets, Tallinn invites exploration of its contrasting districts. Discover creative neighbourhoods filled with galleries and design shops, stroll along the seafront or explore nearby forests and coastal parks. The division between Upper and Lower Town, once separating nobility and commoners, still shapes the city’s unique character and layered identity.

While the Helsinki Archipelago is made up of over 300 unique islands, the city is also nestled less than two hours away from six spectacular national parks, making Finland's beautiful capital the ultimate base for a holiday that combines the best of both worlds.

  • Exploring Suomenlinna, the 18th-century sea fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site

Local chefs turn Arctic ingredients, such as wild berries, reindeer, and mushrooms, into sophisticated dishes with minimalist flair. Food markets like Vanha Kauppahalli (Old Market Hall) offer an authentic taste of Finnish fare, from salmon soup and rye bread to smoked fish and cloudberry jam. Coffee culture runs deep; locals drink more than anywhere else in the world.
