Day 1: Welcome to the Island of Eternal Spring
As the plane begins its spectacular descent over the Atlantic, Madeira’s basalt cliffs rise out of the ocean like a verdant oasis suspended between sky and sea. As soon as you land, collect your hire car at the airport — your passport to absolute freedom on the island’s roads. Head south-east towards Caniço, a charming village a few kilometres from Funchal, where the Quinta Splendida Wellness & Botanical Garden awaits you. Step through the gates of this 30,000 m² botanical garden, home to over 1,000 plant species from all over the world, and let the magic begin. The outdoor pool overlooking the Atlantic, the shaded paths filled with the scent of tropical flowers, the warm hospitality of the staff… You’ve arrived. This evening, take a seat on the terrace at the hotel restaurant for your first dinner featuring Madeiran flavours: try the unmissable espada (black scabbardfish, a deep-sea fish caught off the island’s coast) and raise a glass of dry, mineral-rich Madeira Sercial.
Day 2: Funchal, Baroque capital and jewel of the Atlantic (2-in-1 excursion – Funchal & Câmara de Lobos hop-on hop-off included)
Set off this morning for Funchal, about twenty minutes’ drive to the west. Spend the day exploring the capital and its wonders using your 48-hour pass for the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus, included in your package. From Avenida do Mar (stop 1), board the bus for a complete tour offering exceptional views.
Plan your itinerary at your own pace: get off in the Old Town (stop 3) to stroll along the famous Rua Santa Maria, a veritable open-air museum with its doors painted by local artists. Then step through the colourful door of the Mercado dos Lavradores (stop 4), the farmers’ market, where the stalls are overflowing with strelitzia flowers, exotic fruits and fish still wriggling.
Then let the audio commentary (available in French) guide you to the Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint (stop 12) for a breathtaking panorama, before heading to Câmara de Lobos (stops 13 and 14). Take the time to stroll through this picturesque fishing village with its colourful boats, set against the spectacular cliffs of Cabo Girão. On your return to the centre at the end of the day, round off your exploration with a glass of poncha (sugar cane spirit, honey and lime), the island’s iconic cocktail, in one of the harbour’s authentic bars.
Day 3: The Atlantic ahead – dolphins, whales and vast horizons (Dolphin & Whale Watching + Swimming with Dolphins)
This morning, head to Funchal Marina to board the boat for the Dolphin and Whale Watching and Swimming with Dolphins excursion, which is included in your package. The waters around Madeira are amongst the best in Europe for cetacean watching: common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, sperm whales and even passing blue whales make these deep waters an exceptional marine sanctuary. Slip into the water alongside the dolphins for an absolutely unforgettable weightless encounter. Return to the harbour with stars in your eyes and salt in your hair. The afternoon is devoted to a wellness break at the Quinta Splendida: take a dip in the spa’s indoor or outdoor pool, enjoy a treatment in the botanical garden or a massage with local essential oils. Your body is at one with the sea in the morning, and with the land in the evening — that is the very essence of Madeira.
Day 4: The wild west coast – cliffs, vineyards and fishing villages
Set off westwards this morning for one of the island’s most beautiful circular routes. Your first stop is Câmara de Lobos, less than 10 minutes from Funchal: this fishing village, with its colourful boats moored in a volcanic cove, is a living painting. Churchill himself used to come here to paint during his stays in Madeira. Stroll through the narrow streets adorned with recycled artworks and watch the fishermen mending their nets. A few kilometres further on, Cabo Girão awaits you: at 580 metres above the Atlantic, it is one of Europe’s highest sea cliffs. Dare to walk across the Skywalk’s glass platform and watch the sea crash against the rocks beneath your feet – vertigo guaranteed. Continue on to Ribeira Brava for lunch overlooking the harbour, then head up to the wine-growing heights of the Régião dos Vinhos da Madeira to discover the pergola-style vineyards clinging to the slopes — an acrobatic form of viticulture listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Return to Quinta Splendida in the late afternoon to enjoy the gardens bathed in the golden evening light.
Day 5: Grand Tour of the North – volcanic pools, black sand and an enchanted forest
Today, the northern route has a breathtaking natural spectacle in store for you. Get up early to head to the village of Seixal on the north coast: its black volcanic sand beach, flanked by cliffs and a waterfall that plunges straight into the ocean, is one of the most fascinating on the island. The sensation of basalt sand beneath your feet is anything but ordinary — it serves as a reminder that Madeira was formed by a volcanic eruption 5 million years ago. Carry on to Porto Moniz, at the north-western tip of the island, to take a dip in the famous natural volcanic pools: basins carved out of the rock by millennia of waves, with crystal-clear, temperate waters, sheltered from the Atlantic swell. A moment out of time. On the way back, stop off at the mysterious Fanal Forest, in the heart of the laurisilva — a primary forest listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: ancient lime trees with moss-covered branches emerge from the mist in an almost surreal atmosphere. Dinner en route at a local tasca: carne de vinha d’alhos (pork marinated in Madeira wine) and warm bolos do caco topped with garlic butter.
Day 6: At the edge of the world – São Lourenço and the lunar landscapes of the east
Heading east this morning to reach Ponta de São Lourenço, the peninsula that stretches out from the eastern tip of Madeira like an arm reaching towards the horizon. Here, the landscape changes dramatically: gone is the tropical lushness, replaced by an arid landscape, swept by Atlantic winds and covered in heather and low-growing plants in shades of rust and ochre. The 6 km round-trip walk (moderate elevation gain) takes you to the final cliffs, which are almost lunar in their beauty. From the Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto, the 360° view of the Atlantic is breathtaking. Then head back down to Machico, the first landing site of Portuguese navigators in 1419, to have lunch at one of the seafront restaurants and sample the lapas grilladas (grilled limpets with lemon and butter) — an unmissable local speciality. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon: the botanical gardens at Quinta Splendida are particularly enchanting at this time of day, when the low-angled light plays across the bougainvilleas. The evening is free to enjoy the spa.
Day 7: Peaks above the clouds and sunset over the sea (Madeira Catamaran Tour – Sunset Cruise included)
For early risers, it’s a pre-dawn wake-up call this morning. Take the road that climbs towards the island’s highest points to Pico do Arieiro, at an altitude of 1,818 metres: it is from this viewpoint that Madeira reveals itself in all its majesty, perched above a sea of clouds bathed in the golden light of the rising sun. It’s a sight you’ll never forget. For keen walkers, the PR1 trail links Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo (1,862 m, the island’s highest point) through a landscape of tunnels, vertiginous ridges and 360° panoramic views across the entire archipelago — allow 4 to 5 hours for the round trip if you’re feeling fit. At midday, head back down into the valley for a gentle stroll along a levada: these irrigation channels, dug as far back as the 15th century, wind their way through the laurel forests alongside the water. The Levada das Balcões (45 mins there and back, no difficulty) offers a magnificent view of the lush green mountains. Return to the hotel in the early afternoon to get ready and relax before the grand finale. At the end of the day, head to Funchal Marina to board the Madeira Catamaran Tour – Sunset Cruise, included in your package: as the catamaran glides across a red and gold Atlantic, Madeira rises before you in all its volcanic splendour, its black cliffs plunging into the white foam.
With a glass of Madeira Bual in hand, watch the sun disappear over the horizon in an almost sacred silence — the most beautiful way to round off a stay on the Island of Eternal Spring.
Day 8: Final moments in Madeira and departure
Make the most of this last morning with a final stroll through the botanical gardens of Quinta Splendida, where the morning light makes the dew glisten on the orchids and strelitzias. Enjoy one last breakfast overlooking the Atlantic, your eyes filled with shades of green and blue. Before returning your car at the airport, slip a few typical souvenirs into your suitcase: a bottle of Vintage Madeira, a jar of bolo de mel (spiced cane sugar syrup, the island’s traditional sweet), or a bouquet of dried flowers from the ‘Island of Flowers’. You never really leave Madeira — it remains etched somewhere between your lungs and your memory.
- Handy tip for your stay: Remember to always carry some change with you! The vast majority of parking meters in Madeira accept cash only, and it can be difficult to find change at short notice. Keeping a small supply of change in the car will save you a lot of hassle during your visits.
