Your Itinerary —
During their tour, our members will follow the itinerary as seen below.
10-Night Itinerary
Upon arrival in Lima, enjoy a transfer to your hotel and check-in before spending the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 2: Lima (Breakfast Included)
After breakfast at your hotel, you'll head out for your first day. Enjoy an included half-day city tour in Lima. Your tour will start in downtown Lima, where you will visit the Main Square, where Lima was first founded as "The City of Kings," in 1535. It was already known by the name of Lima when Peru proclaimed its independence from the Spanish Crown in 1821. There, you may see the Presidential Palace, the Archbishop's Palace and the Lima Cathedral. You will then go to Saint Francis' Church and convent, which has an enviable collection of old books and an authentic network of catacombs open to the public. Next, you will go to Pueblo Libre district to visit the Larco Museum, founded by Rafael Larco Hoyle en 1926. The museum, located inside a viceregal mansion built on a pre-Columbian pyramid of the 7th century, houses the most complete pre-Hispanic collection of gold and silver artifacts as well pieces of erotic art. Spend the rest of the day at leisure and enjoy an overnight stay in Lima.
After breakfast, check-out from your hotel and enjoy a transfer to Lima airport for your flight to Arequipa. Upon arrival, you'll be transferred to your hotel to check-in before you enjoy an included half-day city tour. Your journey will start at the Plaza de Armas, one of the most beautiful in Peru, next to Arequipa's magnificent Cathedral, which was built during the XVII century and rebuilt many times after several earthquakes. From there, you will be transferred to the Santa Catalina Monastery, an authentic cloister built in 1579 who's little religious citadel is still in use today. After that, visit the ´Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús´ (1590), considered a classical example of the baroque local architecture that boasts an exceptional collection of paintings and murals. To end the day, visit the districts of Yanahuara and Carmen Alto, and enjoy a panoramic view of Arequipa's countryside. Afterwards, return to the hotel for an overnight stay in Arequipa.
Day 4: Arequipa - Puno (Breakfast and Lunch Included)
After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, check-out of the hotel and depart towards Puno. On this 7-hour journey (including a lunch break and a visit en-route), you'll cross the marvellous landscapes of the Andes and climb towards the altiplano. Enjoy a picnic lunch with a view of the Sillustani lagoon and pay a visit to the Sillustani necropolis. In the late afternoon, arrive in Puno and check-in at the hotel before spending the rest of the day at leisure.
After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a full-day trip to the Uros and Taquile Islands. You will be transferred to the lake port of Puno, where a boat will take you to the floating islands of Uros. The Uros are an ancient society that populates a series of artificial islands built on the basis of cattail plant, which grows in the lake itself. The islands are built by weaving reeds in places where it grows thicker and forms a natural layer. Over them they build their houses, also made of reed, and cook outdoors in order to prevent possible fires. After an hour and a half tour, you will continue your trip to the island of Taquile. This island is Quechua, unlike the other islands in the lake being Aymara speakers. The Island was part of the Inca Empire and vestiges of that culture can still be seen in its buildings. Once there, you will be given a brief explanation of the island and will witness a cultural activity. Then, you'll eat lunch and return to the city of Puno to spend the rest of the evening at leisure.
Day 6: Puno - Cusco (Breakfast and Lunch Included)
After breakfast at the hotel, you will check-out of your hotel and be transferred to the bus station. Travel through the jaw-dropping landscapes of the highland plateau, which are dotted by Andean hamlets and herds of grazing llamas and vicuñas. Stop en route at the archaeological site of Pukara, which dates from 200BC to 300AD, as well as in Raqchi to admire the ruins of an Inca temple built to worship Wiracocha, one of the most important Inca gods. There is one more stop before Cusco at Andahuaylillas, a picturesque town famed for the beautiful 16th century Church of St Peter the Apostle. It boasts a gilded baroque interior and frescoes so delicate that it is known as the ‘Sistine Chapel of America’. Upon arrival in Cusco, a transportation service will take you from the bus station to the hotel in the city where you can check-in and enjoy an overnight stay.
After breakfast, enjoy a half-day walking tour in Cusco. Your tour will start at the Coricancha Temple, one of the most important buildings in the city. It was one of the most important centres of worship to the Sun God of the Incas that was converted into a convent after the arrival of the Spanish. Then, visit the wonderful Cusco Cathedral, built between 1560 and 1664, and end the tour by visiting the San Pedro market, a pantry of thousands of products from different areas of the region. Finally, you will be transferred to your hotel. Please Note: The visit to San Pedro market can be replaced by a visit to Casa Concha, an old colonial mansion that houses an impressive collection of Inca pieces from Machu Picchu. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure and enjoy an overnight stay in Cusco.
Day 8: Cusco - Sacred Valley - Aguas Calientes (Breakfast and Lunch Included)
After breakfast at the hotel, check-out and head to the Sacred Valley. Your tour will start with a visit to Awanakancha, a farm and textiles showroom, where local families show the entire traditional process of weaving and making garments. You will then visit the Pisac market, which has stands that exhibit and sell products manufactured by local residents. Beautiful alpaca textiles, musical instruments, paintings, carvings, necklaces and replicas of old Inca pieces are sure to catch your eye. Next, have lunch at a local restaurant, followed by a visit to Ollantaytambo, making a series of stops at points of interest. The town of Ollantaytambo is a typical example of Incan urban planning, whose present-day residents still live in accordance with their old traditions. Inca ruler Pachacuti conquered the town, destroyed it and built a new one, absorbing it as part of his empire. This town exhibits one of the most remarkable complexes of the Inca Empire. At the end of the excursion, a transportation service will drive you to the Ollantaytambo train station. Your tour to Machu Picchu begins with a train ride to Aguas Calientes, arriving in approximately two hours. This town is also known as "Machu Picchu pueblo" - the town of Machu Picchu - and is the last stop before entering the most important archaeological site in Peru. In Aguas Calientes you can find a train station, a craft market, restaurants and hotels of different categories for those who prefer to spend the night at the foot of the mountain and climb it early. Upon arrival, a representative will assist you with your check-in and accommodation.
After breakfast at the hotel, you will embark on an epic half-day tour. After a short transfer by bus, reach Machu Picchu, a masterpiece of engineering and architecture that served as a sanctuary and retreat for the Inca ruler Pachacuti. Machu Picchu, which means "Old Mountain", is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Once in the citadel, you may optionally also visit the Intipunku (Sun Gate), the Wayna Picchu (subject to space availability) and the Inca Bridge. Return to Aguas Calientes for lunch at Café Inkaterra. In the afternoon, head to the Aguas Calientes train station to take the train back to Ollantaytambo and start the return to Cusco from there.
