Your Itinerary —
Day 1: Arrive into Lima
Upon arrival at the airport, you will receive a transfer to your hotel. Overnight at a selected hotel in Lima.
Day 2: Lima-Cusco (Breakfast)
Breakfast at the hotel. Explore Lima´s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with fascinating historic buildings. Start with a scenic tour in the colonial downtown, which originates and spreads out from the Main Square, where you can appreciate the grandiose architecture of the Spanish Empire. Be amazed by Lima´s Cathedral, built during the 16th century and which took over 80 years to complete. Then visit the Casa Aliaga, a colonial mansion granted in 1535 by chief conquistador Francisco Pizarro to Jerónimo de Aliaga, one of his captains. This is the only house from that time that is still owned by the same family through the centuries. Continue to the Larco Museum, located in the traditional Pueblo Libre district, which is housed in a beautifully restored vice regal mansion built on a pre-Columbian pyramid from the VII century. The museum boasts the most complete pre-Hispanic collection of gold and silver objects, as well as pieces of erotic art. Finally, you are transferred to Lima airport to take your flight to Cusco.
Once you arrive at the Cusco airport, a transportation service waits for you to transfer you to your hotel. A representative will guide you around the attractions and facilities that the city has to offer.
In the afternoon, the tour begins in Coricancha, also known as 'The Temple of the Sun', which was built by order of Inca Pachacuti and at the arrival of the Spaniards became the foundation for the construction of the Santo Domingo Convent. Then, visit the Cathedral, the most imposing monument of the Main Square, its construction took 100 years and was completed in 1654. Later, head to Sacsayhuaman, one of the most emblematic buildings of the Incas erected by Inca Pachacuti in the 15th century. It is an immense fortress built with large stones and their transportation and assembly remains a mystery. Every June 24th the festival of Inti Raymi, in which the sun is worshipped, is recreated during the winter solstice. Continue to Qenqo, an archaeological complex for religious purposes, where agricultural rituals were held. To conclude, visit Puka Pukara, seven kilometres from the city. Puca Pucara, which means 'red fort,' was an architectural complex of alleged military use with multiple environments, plazas, baths, aqueducts, and towers. It is believed that it was used by the Inca entourage while the leader rested in Tambomachay. When finished, return to the hotel.
Breakfast at the hotel. During the morning, you are picked up from your hotel to visit the town of Chinchero*, a traditional Cusco urban centre located at an elevated point with a beautiful view of the valley. The inhabitants of this area preserve the artisan traditions and the inherited knowledge of the Incas and display them in their clothes and customs. In Chinchero there are also archaeological remains and a beautiful seventeenth-century church, one of the first Catholic buildings in Peru. Then, you are transferred to the Living Museum of Yucay, a centre of Andean handicrafts traditions where demonstrations of the elaboration of textile work, adobe, pottery and silverware are carried out in the same way in which they used to in ancient times; an original recreation of Incan traditions. In addition, you may be able to feed the ´residents at this museum. They include llamas, sheep and alpacas! Later, have lunch in Ollantaytambo and enjoy a superior Andean gastronomy experience in Chuncho restaurant, where the true spirit of the Sacred Valley radiates in a cosy atmosphere. Upon arriving in Ollantaytambo, visit its town, inhabited uninterruptedly since Inca times, and climb the iconic fortress, built next to a mountain. At the end of this activity, you are transferred back to your hotel. *On Sundays, also visit the local market.
