Day 5: Sacred Valley - Machu Picchu - Aguas Calientes - Cusco
Your trip to Machu Picchu begins with a 90-minute train journey through spectacular scenery to Aguas Calientes from Ollantaytambo Station. After a quick bus transfer (25 minutes), you will arrive at Machu Picchu, the "lost city of the Incas". It seems that the archaeological site was built in 1450 by the Inca Pachacutec as a holiday residence. A century later, the citadel was abandoned after the conquest of the Spaniards, fleeing from destruction as other Incan sites have known. The vegetation then gradually invaded its stone buildings and hid it, protecting it for centuries. During the guided tour, discover the origins of this impressive place, admire the main monuments such as the central square, the royal rooms, the temple of the three windows, the circular towers, the solar calendar and the cemeteries. After the visit, return to Aguas Calientes to lunch the train to Ollantaytambo. On arrival, transfer to your hotel in Cuzco.
Today you will take a guided tour from Coricancha Temple, one of the most important buildings in the city. It was one of the most important worship centers of the Sun God of the Incas, which was turned into a convent after the arrival of the Spaniards. Then visit the magnificent Cathedral of Cusco, built between 1560 and 1664, and end the visit by visiting the San Pedro Market, a pantry of thousands of products from different parts of the region. Finally, you will be transferred to your hotel.
