Your destinations —
Bergen
Bergen, the gateway to the fjords, is Norway’s second-largest city and a UNESCO World Heritage treasure. Perched on the west coast and embraced by seven mountains, this Nordic gem invites you to breathe in crisp mountain air and lose yourself in its storybook landscapes.
Must-Sees:
- Bryggen Wharf: Once the bustling heart of Bergen’s medieval trade, this UNESCO site offers a fairytale harbour front, perfect for a lingering stroll.
- Fjord Cruise: Take in the salt-tinged air and breathtaking views as you drift past cascading waterfalls, entranced by the silent grandeur of Norway’s fjords.
- Mount Ulriken: By trail or by cable car, Ulriken lifts you above Bergen to a world of fresh air, rugged beauty and unforgettable vistas.
- Fløibanen Funicular: Glide from the city centre to Mount Fløyen, where sweeping views, woodland trails and a touch of magic await.
Culinary Culture:
Bergen’s gastronomy is steeped in the salt and spray of the North Sea. Taste the delicate sweetness of freshly netted king crab, the buttery richness of persetorsk and the tang of wild berries gathered from nearby hills. Let the scent of warm skillingsboller cinnamon buns guide you into a café, where strong coffee offers comfort against the drizzle, and New Nordic flavours turn the city’s bounty into art on a plate.
Dive Deeper:
Venture beyond Bergen to wander through the orchards and waterfalls of Hardangerfjord, cruise the mighty Sognefjord, or hike the trails of Vidden between Fløyen and Ulriken. For a cultural escape, visit Edvard Grieg’s lakeside home, Troldhaugen, where music drifts through the air.
Good to Know:
The currency is the Norwegian krone (NOK). Bergen is easily explored on foot, while the Fløibanen funicular and Ulriken cable car help with the hills. Pack a rain jacket, as this is one of Europe’s wettest cities. In May, the Bergen International Festival brings music, theatre and celebration to the streets.
Flam

Set at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the majestic Sognefjord, Flåm is framed by towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls and serene waters that reflect the ever-changing Nordic light. Remote yet easily accessible, it offers one of Norway’s most iconic natural settings.

- Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana): One of the world’s most scenic train journeys, climbing steeply through valleys and waterfalls.
- Nærøyfjord: A UNESCO-listed fjord renowned for its narrow passages and dramatic scenery.
- Stegastein Viewpoint: A striking platform offering panoramic views over the fjord landscape.
- Flåm Harbour: A peaceful waterfront ideal for boat trips and fjord cruises.
- Rallarvegen Cycling Route: A spectacular trail through mountains and high plateaus.
Culinary culture:
Dining in Flåm reflects Norway’s focus on fresh, local ingredients. Expect dishes featuring salmon, Arctic char and cured meats, often accompanied by seasonal vegetables and Nordic berries. Cosy restaurants and fjord-side cafés provide warming meals after a day of exploration, frequently paired with locally brewed beer or cider from the surrounding region.
Dive deeper:
Beyond its postcard beauty, Flåm invites immersion in nature. Kayak along glassy fjord waters, hike through alpine valleys dotted with waterfalls, or take a fjord cruise to appreciate the sheer scale of the landscape. In every season, the scenery transforms, from lush green summers to snow-dusted winters, offering a profound sense of calm and connection to the natural world.
Good to know:
Flåm is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes from Bergen by car or train. The best time to visit is from May to September for hiking and fjord cruises, though winter offers a quieter, snow-covered perspective. The local currency is the Norwegian krone (NOK).
