A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn, usually featuring:
- Tatami-matted rooms (woven straw floors)
- Futon bedding, laid out on the floor each night
- Sliding paper doors (shoji) and minimalist design
- Shared bathrooms and baths (often hot springs, or onsen)
- A strong emphasis on omotenashi, the art of Japanese hospitality
Please note that access to communal onsen areas (Japanese hot springs) is generally not permitted for guests with tattoos.
