Kyoto

If you're looking for old Japan, Kyoto is a must: tranquil gardens, sublime temples and colourful shrines can be found in abundance. While the rest of Japan has embraced modernity, Kyoto still keeps traditions alive. Take a stroll through the Nishijin district and spy some of the older residents emerging from the machiya (traditional townhouses) to ladle water onto their porch.

If you go by an old shōtengai (shopping street) you can admire the ancient speciality shops: tofu sellers, fishmongers, pickle vendors and tea merchants.

Hiroshima

Spend some time exploring ukkei-en garden, with 200 yoshino cherry trees, mountain cherry trees and weeping cherry trees that blossom in the spring! The Memorial Peace Park & Museum is definitely worth a visit too.

Okayama

Okayama is the largest city in the Chugoku Region right after Hiroshima. It has its own charm and, like Matsumoto, is known for the 16th-century Okayama Castle with its intriguing black exterior. As well as being an important transportation hub, the city is also home to stunning natural places including the expansive Korakuen Garden, which is popular with locals and tourists alike.

Osaka

Explore Japan's second city and enjoy the lively neighbourhoods of Namba and Dotombori, try an izakaya, Japanese bar-restaurants! Enjoy the local specialities: okonomiyaki, savoury cabbage pancake, or takoyaki, small octopus dough balls. Continue your adventure with a trip to Osaka Castle Park with its 300 Yoshino cherry trees or to Shi-Tennoji Temple which is the oldest in Japan.

Kanazawa

Touched with the grand allure of its past, Kanazawa prides itself on being a historical jewel of Japan. It is best known for being home to one of Japan's most beautiful landscaped gardens - Kenrokuen - a castle garden originating from the 17th century. It's easy to discover this nostalgic city in a few days, admiring its celebrated penchant for the traditional arts, including hand-painted silks and lacquerware, ceramics and delicate gold leaf work. Takayama

Established as a castle town in the 16th century, Takayama has retained its unique charm to the present day. Day 1: UK - Kyoto
Make your way to Kyoto, Kansai International Airport.

Day 2-4: Kyoto

Day 5-6: Hiroshima
Take a Shinkansen journey to Hiroshima, approximately 2 hours, covered by your Japan Rail Pass. Check into your hotel. Visit the city of Hiroshima, known because of the nuclear bombings of August 6, 1945, the city has imposed its faith in the future and has become a symbol of peace.

Days 7: Okayama
Embark on a Shinkansen journey to Okayama (40 minutes, covered by your JR Pass). Check into your hotel (in Okayama or Kurashiki, 15 minutes by train from Okayama). Free time in Okayama and its surroundings. At the crossroads between two islands, Okayama, former seigneurial city, reflects the nobleness of a past kingdom.

Days 1-12: Kyoto, Hiroshima, Okayama, Kanazawa etc.
Very similar to the 12-night itinerary, except you will have an additional night in Kyoto, 1 less night in Kanazawa, but two additional nights in Takayama - Japanese Alps.

Days 12-13: Takayama - Japanese Alps
Transfer to Takayama with Shinakansen and express train (included with the JR Pass (2h30)). You can also reach Takayama by bus from Kanazawa via Shirakawa-go typical village, however bus price (around 30€) is not included. Details of the trip in your travel logue.

Takayama is famous for being an area most skilled in woodwork. Though this small town is surrounded by mountains, it did not stop it from spreading its reputation. During the Edo Period Takayama was controlled by the shogun, whom of which managed to generate fortune for the city. Currently in the heart of Takayama is a preserved merchant street that continues to sell its beautiful crafts. Inside this small village is a blossoming culture and gorgeous views to see. It will definitely surprise and charm you once you visit.

Kyoto - Visit of a sake brewery and sake tasting in Kyoto (3 hours)

Discover all the secrets of sake, traditional Japanese alcohol (15 degrees, different from the Chinese sakewell-known in Europe) in the city of Kyoto. You will start with a visit of a sake brewery where you will see the traditional brewing processes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Then, during a tasting session with experts, you will learn about the unique characteristics of the different varieties of sake. Finally, you will taste traditional Japanese "otsumami" snacks and discover how the taste of sake can completely change when combined with different dishes. Unlimited 3-day pass in Kyoto, Nara, Osaka and surroundings

In large cities such as Kyoto, the use of public transport is essential to visit the city and its surroundings. With this 3-day pass, you can enjoy unlimited transportation in Kyoto, Nara, Himeji, Kobe and many other cities to freely explore the region. Even if you have a Japan Rail Pass, not all public transportation is covered by it (bus, subway, private lines...) and private lines are often faster.

One night in a traditional accommodation (ryokan)

Enjoy an authentic experience by staying one night in a traditional accommodation (ryokan), including Japanese dinner and breakfast. You will stay in the city of Nara, 1 hour from Kyoto with the JR train (covered by your Japan Rail Pass). It will replace your last night in Kyoto (western hotel or traditional house if you choose the other option). Depending on availability, you will stay in ryokan in Miyajima (the island of the gods near Hiroshima), Kurashiki (Venice of Japan) or Kanazawa. Whether it is a 3* or 4* option, the traditional accommodation will be a 2/3* equivalent ryokan (exemple: Mimatsu ryokan or same ⅔* category ryokan). Offered: the private bathroom in your room, unlike the majority of ryokan where the bathroom is shared.

Stay in a traditional house in Kyoto

Live an unforgettable experience by staying in a traditional house in Kyoto instead of a western hotel. Much wider than a hotel room, the houses all have at least one Japanese room with tatamis and futons for sleeping, as well as all the necessary modern comforts. Each house has also been chosen for its location (transport, shops, temples...). They are located either in the historical district of Gion or on the edge of the Philosophy path and the Silver Pavilion.

He remains available during your stay in case of problems or questions. The welcoming by an English-speaking specialist, the sheets, towels and cleaning at the end of your stay are included.

Enjoy a guided day with one of the local! Example of visits: Explore Nijo Castle, the Kyoto residence of the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion). Then it's onto Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion) and the Gion district. Meals, transportation and site entrance charges for you and the guide are not included in the price (Guide meals, guide transportation and guide site entrance fees: roughly 25€/activity). Kyoto - One-day kimono rental

Rent a kimono and walk for a day in the traditional streets of Kyoto in this typically Japanese outfit. You can pick up your kimono from 9 am and must return it before 5:30 pm.

Kyoto - Tea Ceremony (45 minutes)

Experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony in an authentic district of Kyoto. Taste the delicious matcha tea and understand the complexity of its service in one of the best tea houses of the city.

Takao Guided Day Tour (Private, from Kyoto)

Discover with your English-speaking guide this treasure still preserved from the tourist crowds, close to Kyoto. A breath of fresh air along a torrent of crystal-clear waters, in the middle of an unspoiled and wild nature. Walking time: about 4 hours. Hiking level: easy. This walk is not recommended for children under 6 years old.

Kanazawa - Private Guided Tour (half day)

Discover this traditional city with an English-speaking guide for half a day and go off the beaten track. Example of itinerary: geisha and samurai district, Kanazawa castle, Japanese garden, museum of modern art or fish market. Meals, transportation and site entrance charges for yourself are not included in the price. All our guides are bilingual English speakers. French, Spanish or Italian depending on availability.

The flights included are with either a scheduled or no-frills airline and are subject to live availability and prices can change. You can choose your preferred departure times during the booking process. Please select your flight options carefully as departure and arrival airports may differ.

Transfers: Transfers from Kansai International Airport (KIX) to your hotel by shared shuttle are included for flight-inclusive offers. Please note that if you subscribe to the "traditional house" option, the shuttle will also take you directly to your house. Transfers by public transport (price included with your prepaid transportation card) to KIX airport are included. Please note that this is the fastest way to reach the airport from Osaka. Important Information —

Japan Rail Pass: The Japan Rail Pass is a special train pass for foreign tourists visiting Japan. It includes the use of all trains operated by Japan Railways, more than 20,000km of railways throughout Japan including the Shinkansen Bullet Trains (except for certain high-speed “Nozomi” and “Mizuho” trains). This allows you to access the vast majority of tourist attractions from the North to the South of Japan, on the 4 main islands for days your pass is valid.

What you receive is an official voucher that you will have to exchange it at a JR office (which can be found at major airports and JR stations), once you have arrived in Japan, you will need your passport to exchange the voucher. At the time of the exchange, you will have to provide a date for when you want your JR Pass to be activated. This date must be within 30 days after the exchange.

With your JR Pass you can go anywhere you want on the Japan Railways railroad network. With the JR Pass, booking is not an obligation and any non-reserved (and available) seat can be occupied upon presentation of your Japan Rail Pass. You can also reserve a seat without additional charges by going to a travel service centeror JR ticket office (“midori no madoguchi”) before taking the train. Simply show your Japan Rail Pass and you can get a seat ticket.

If booking as a single traveller, room occupancy is not guaranteed. You may be placed in either a single, double or twin room, based on the availability of the property at the time.
