Your Itinerary In Detail

Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik

  • After landing, luggage collection and clearing customs, it's time to collect your hire car at the airport and drive to your hotel in Reykjavik (approximate distance: 31 miles).
  • The remainder of the day is free to spend at leisure.
  • One of our favourite activities after a long flight is to visit one of the geothermal baths in the area. It's truly revitalising to relax in the warm water while breathing in the fresh Icelandic air, not to mention being a wonderful way to experience everyday Icelandic life and maybe meet some locals.
  • Stroll through the old town, visit one of the museums or relax with a warming cup of coffee in a cosy café.
  • Please note: Check-in is possible only between 14:00-16:00 in most Icelandic hotels.

Overnight stay in Reykjavik.

DAY 2: GOLDEN CIRCLE

(Approximate distance: 124 miles)

Thingvellir National Park - Geysers - Golden Waterfall

  • Set off for Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the world's oldest parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland's largest lake. This is also the point where the tectonic plates that separate the North American and European continents meet. You will have the rare opportunity to take a walk between two continents.
  • Visit the unique geothermal geyser areas. Walk on a path along the colourful bubbling mud pools and steaming geysers. The most famous is Strokkur, which erupts every ten minutes or so. Then visit the dramatic, two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, which is spectacular in winter when it is frozen over. You can admire it from different angles along a series of paths.
  • Drive to your accommodation in the south of Iceland along snow-covered country roads. If nature co-operates, you might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
  • Top tip: The area around the Golden Circle is rich in hot springs, and there are two large thermal baths that are very popular with the locals. Laugarvatn Fountain is located on a hot spring, and its steam baths are good for the skin and joints. The Secret Lagoon is an enchanting historic geothermal natural pool lined with stones and with a small geyser nearby.

Overnight stay in Hella or Hvollsvollur.

DAY 3: SOUTH COAST

(Approximate distance: 115 miles)

Twin waterfalls - volcanic landscapes - black sand beaches

  • Explore the epic south coast, a region lined with volcanic mountains and glacial vistas. A visit to the LAVA Centre in the town of Hvollsvollur is to be recommended. Visit interactive exhibitions about the volcanoes and earthquakes that contributed to the formation of Iceland.
  • Visit two spectacular waterfalls that have a beauty all of their own in winter, including Seljalandsfoss - a ribbon-shaped waterfall that cascades gracefully over a cliff.
  • The majestic Skogafoss has become one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland: Make sure your camera is charged and ready for a selfie. If conditions are safe and permit it, visitors can even walk behind the waterfall
  • En route, take in views of the Myrdalsjokull glacier, one of our favourite places for guided glacier tours or snowmobile tours. Continue to Reynisfjara Beach with its striking black sand. In this area, characterised by crashing waves and extraordinary rock formations, you can feel the power of nature.
  • Proceed past Eldhraun, the largest known lava flow, to your accommodation.

Overnight stay in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.

Day 4: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon & Vatnajökull National Park

(Approximate distance: 155 miles)

Glacier National Park - Iceberg Lagoon - the largest glacier in Europe

  • Start your day in the southern part of Vatnajokull National Park, the largest of its kind in Western Europe. It is dominated by the Vatnajokull glacier, the most significant ice cap in Europe
  • Start with a visit to the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, where you can admire the breathtaking spectacle of floating blue icebergs in this 180 metre deep glacier lagoon. Nearby is Diamond Beach, where silver icebergs rest on black sand. Both the lagoon and the beach are ideal places to take breathtakingly beautiful photos.
  • Depending on your schedule and sense of adventure, you can join an optional guided tour with SuperJeep (extra charge) to visit a mystical, crystal-clear ice cave deep in the glaciers. The tour starts at the Jokulsarlon car park and must be booked in advance. We are happy to help you with this.
  • It's worth noting that the Fjallsarlon iceberg lagoon is very beautiful and often has fewer visitors than other spot - permitting visitors to photograph the glacier lagoon in quite a different way.
  • Vatnajokull National Park with the Skaftafell glacier is an area of outstanding natural beauty that also offers great opportunities for winter hiking. The park's visitor centre can tell you which trails are open for hiking. On a guided excursion that takes you directly onto the ice, you can get up close to a glacier - and learn a lot about it.

Overnight stay in the Kirkjubaejarklaustur area.

DAY 5: HVERAGERDI, BLUE LAGOON AND REYKJAVIK

(Approximate distance:  229 miles)

Greenhouse village - UNESCO Geopark - Geothermal lagoon

  • Drive to the charming greenhouse village of Hveragerdi, one of the few communities in the world located directly above an active geothermal area. Hveragerdi is often referred to as the 'flower village' because of its many greenhouses, which utilise the hot water from the nearby springs. There are several restaurants and quaint shops here, as well as a small geothermal park, making it well worth a visit.
  • Turn onto a coastal road known for the breathtaking views of the mighty sea waves crashing against the shore. The road leads to the Reykjanes Peninsula, a UNESCO Geopark with many fascinating geological wonders, including the bubbling geothermal area of Krysuvik and the lunar landscapes of Lake Kleifarvatn
  • Take a relaxing dip in the famous Blue Lagoon, a unique natural wonder with pleasantly warm, mineral-rich geothermal water in the middle of a black lava field. (Please note: entry to the Blue Lagoon must be booked in advance. We will be happy to help you with the booking).
  • Should you be interested in culture and history, a visit to the Viking World exhibition (optional, admission not included) is well worth the visit. Learn facts about the life of the Vikings and visit the Islendingurinn, a replica of a Viking ship that sailed from Iceland to North America in 2000.
  • Return to Reykjavik and spend the evening at leisure exploring the Icelandic capital.

Overnight stay in Reykajvik.

DAY 6: DEPARTURE

(Approximate distance: 31 miles)

  • Return to Keflavik International Airport.
  • It is recommended that you depart your hotel in Reykjavik at least 3 hours before your departure. The journey to the airport takes approximately 1 hour and check-in starts 2 hours before departure.
  • Your hire car must be returned to the airport service area, which is located just 2 minutes from the airport building. A shuttle will then take you to the departure hall.

Tip: If you have not yet visited the Blue Lagoon but have some free time on your last day, it's an ideal activity en route to the airport. (Be sure to allow at least 2 to 2.5 hours extra time for this detour).

Fontana Geothermal Baths

Discover a unique experience of the healing powers of geothermal springs. Dive into a natural pool, listen to the bubbling hot spring in the steam rooms or (for the more adventurous) take a dip in the refreshing lake.

Since 1929, locals have been enjoying the healing powers of Lake Laugarvatn's natural steam baths. Hot, healing steam simmers directly from the ground through grates in the cabin floors of the three traditional hammams. The temperature of the steam varies between 40°C (104°F) and 50°C (122°F). The grates in the floor of the hammams allow you to hear and feel the natural hot spring boiling just below, creating a unique and natural experience.

Next to the steam rooms is Ylur, a Finnish-style sauna. Sit back and enjoy the beautiful view of the lake through the large window. Three connected outdoor mineral baths vary in depth, size and temperature. A whirlpool built at a slightly higher level offers panoramic views of the magnificent surroundings.

The ensemble is completed by the lake itself and the beach. You can walk into the cool lake from a dock or step onto the warm black sand beach. The cold baths have health benefits.
