Your itinerary in detail —
Days 1 & 2
Day 1: Copenhagen
- The cruise begins in the heart of Copenhagen, where the Ocean Albatros is moored. Get settled in your cabin as you set sail.
- Dinner will be served in the elegant restaurant as you will pass Kronborg Castle, which gained fame for being the castle in Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Day 2: Skagen
- Moor in the important fishing port and artistic area of beautiful Skagen. Skagen is known for its fantastic sunshine, vibrant city life, quaint yellow houses and white sandy beaches.
- Take a coach tour to Grenen, the pointed peninsula that marks Denmark's northernmost point. Climb aboard a tractor-bus and admire the spot where the waters of the Skagerrak and Kattegat meet the waves.
- Take a leisurely stroll through the town that houses the Skagen Art Museum, where visitors can admire the permanent collection of works by the famous 19th-century Danish painters Anna Ancher, P.S. Krøyer, Holger Drachmann and others.
- Return to the port of Skagen to re-embark for a late lunch and continue on the North Sea to Norway. The first navigators of this region, now known as Vikings, were people from the Nordic countries of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. As you travel some of the routes taken by the Vikings, you will learn more about their history and legacy and perhaps dispel some romanticised views of this seafaring people.
Days 3 & 4
Day 3: Haugesund
- Head to small islands and gentle hills between Bergen and Stavanger in south-western Norway, where lies the sheltered Karmsund Strait; at its northern entrance find the beautiful old town of Haugesund, home of Harald Fairhair, Norway's first Viking king. The history of shipping and shipbuilding is evident throughout the town.
- Many Icelandic sagas tell us the stories of the first Viking king, and the Orkneyinga and Heimskringla sagas in particular tell of Harald Fairhair's military journey westwards. Here the king fought to rid the region of dissident Viking pirates, who were raiding the Norwegian coast. The expedition then continued to Scotland, where many of these dissidents had taken refuge, crossing the same seas where our itinerary takes us.
Day 4: Shetland Islands
- Approach Lerwick, the capital of Shetland. Shetland consists of over 100 islands, of which only 15 are inhabited all year round.
- Once safely docked at the harbour, set off through Lerwick in the direction of Scalloway for a short scenic drive. Enjoy views of the charming village and the imposing Scalloway Castle.
- Following the road northwards to Clickimin Broch, and discover this well-preserved and restored Broch, a mysterious Iron Age fortresses (please note: the coach excursion is part of the excursion package and is not included in the price of the trip).
- Afterwards, return to Lerwick and continue to the nearby Isle of Noss, home to some of Scotland's most active seabird colonies.
- Leave Shetland and sail south through the Fair Isle Channel towards Orkney.
