Your Destinations —
Every whim, need and pocket is catered for in true enterprising spirit by an equally dazzling number of venues – swanky malls where the moneyed shop, chic side-street boutiques, antique stores, gadget bazaars, and a colourful mix of markets where you can haggle to your heart’s content. The city has no sales tax so prices are generally attractive to visitors.
Long dismissed as little more than a sterile stopover, Singapore has reinvented itself as one of the world's hotlist destinations.
The world's aspiring 'City in a Garden' is an unexpected wonderland for fans of all things green and natural. Catch a city bus and end up in ancient rainforests rustling with monkeys and Greater Racket-tailed Drongos, muddy wetlands teeming with lobsters and giant lizards, or sleepy farms heaving with bananas, papayas and jackfruit. Alternatively, hop on a bumboat and then cycle your way around a rustic island paradise. Or just stay central and escape to Singapore's soothing Botanic Gardens. Welcome to the wild side, in an oh-so-Singaporean, user-friendly package.
Towering limestone pillars and tiny islets topped by forest rise from the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. Halong translates as 'where the dragon descends into the sea' and legend tells that this mystical seascape was created when a great mountain dragon charged towards the coast, its flailing tail gouging out valleys and crevasses.
As the creature plunged into the sea, the area filled with water leaving only the pinnacles visible.
Danang
Nowhere in Vietnam is changing as fast as Danang. For decades it had a reputation as a provincial backwater, but big changes are ongoing. Stroll along the Han riverfront and you'll find gleaming new modernist hotels, and apartments and restaurants are emerging. Spectacular new bridges now span the Han river, and in the north of the city, the landmark new D-City is rising from the flatlands.
Thanks to a surrounding coastline of white-sand beaches this is Cambodia's most happening sun-sloth destination. Today it is a bustling and ever expanding city, but its sandy bits are one step removed from the hubbub. Even further away from the hustle, in the far south of town, is relaxed Otres Beach.
The mellow scene here ticks all the boxes if you're looking for lazy days of sunbathing. The sandy strips rimmed by casuarina trees and coconut palms have plenty of tropical charm and it's easy to find stretches of sand to yourself, especially if you venture outside the centre.
Called the Coconut Island, Koh Samui is situated in the Gulf of Thailand bordering the South China Sea. Once a haven for fishermen, it is Thailand's third-largest island. Visit the Lamai Temple, the revered Big Buddha Temple, and magnificent vistas at Chaweng View. See the strange formations at Grandmother and Grandfather Rock and mingle with the locals at the multicultural fishing village Huatanon. Stop to see Koh Samui's sacred mummified monk at the Kunaram Temple, or engage with nature at Namuang Waterfall.
Indulge in some delectable Thai cuisine and other international fare, particularly prominent in Chaweng Beach. This popular evening hotspot is filled with myriad eateries, many of which serve fresh seafood on the beach itself. Chaweng is also home to numerous bars, chic lounges, and nightclubs.
Here, climate-controlled mega-malls sit side-by-side with 200-year-old village homes; gold-spired Buddhist temples share space with neon-lit strips; slow-moving traffic is bypassed by long-tail boats plying the royal river; and streets lined with food carts are overlooked by restaurants on top of skyscrapers.
