Lapland —
Stretching across northern Finland and Sweden, Lapland is a realm of Arctic enchantment - a land where silence reigns, snow sparkles under the low winter sun, and nature dictates the rhythm of life. From the ethereal glow of the Northern Lights to the endless daylight of the midnight sun, this far northern wilderness offers a rare sense of peace and wonder. Beneath its frozen lakes and sweeping forests lies Sápmi, the ancestral land of the Sámi people, whose traditions and connection to nature still shape the region’s soul. Whether you seek pristine adventure, deep tranquillity, or cultural discovery, Lapland is an unforgettable escape into the magic of the North.
Must-sees:
- Rovaniemi (Finland): The official home of Santa Claus and a gateway to Arctic exploration.
- Kiruna (Sweden): A mining town surrounded by wild landscapes, soon to be relocated to preserve its heritage.
- Abisko National Park: One of the world’s best places to witness the Northern Lights, with crystal-clear skies.
- Inari & Utsjoki (Finland): Centres of Sámi culture and heritage amid breathtaking tundra scenery.
- Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park: A sanctuary of fells, forests and frozen lakes ideal for skiing and snowshoeing.
Culinary culture:
Lapland’s cuisine reflects the purity of its landscapes - simple, hearty and rooted in tradition. Local specialities include reindeer, Arctic char, and smoked salmon, often accompanied by tangy lingonberries or sweet cloudberries. Warm up with a bowl of Lappish salmon soup or savour freshly baked flatbread by a crackling fire. Many restaurants in Kiruna or Rovaniemi offer modern takes on these age-old recipes, paired beautifully with Nordic craft beers or berry liqueurs.
Dive deeper:
To truly experience Lapland, step beyond the trails and into the world of the Sámi. Learn about reindeer herding and the centuries-old connection between people and nature, or visit the Ájtte Museum in Jokkmokk (Sweden) and Siida Museum in Inari (Finland) to explore Sámi art, history and traditions. In winter, glide across frozen rivers on a husky sledge or chase the Northern Lights under starlit skies; in summer, paddle through mirror-like lakes beneath the midnight sun.
Good to know:
Lapland spans the northernmost regions of Finland and Sweden, reachable via Rovaniemi, Kittilä or Kiruna airports. The best time to visit is from December to March for snowy adventures, or from June to August for the midnight sun. The currency is the euro (€) in Finland and the Swedish krona (SEK) in Sweden. Dress in layers — winter temperatures can drop below –30°C, while summers are mild and bright.
