Jeddah

Jeddah, the gateway to Mecca and a vibrant Red Sea port, is Saudi Arabia’s most cosmopolitan city. A historic trading hub turned modern metropolis, it blends old and new with ease, where gleaming skyscrapers rise beside centuries-old coral stone houses, and traditional souks hum with life just minutes from chic waterfront cafés.

Must-sees:

  • Al-Balad: Wander through Jeddah’s atmospheric old town, a UNESCO-listed maze of coral-stone houses, intricately carved wooden balconies, and bustling souks.
  • Jeddah Corniche: A sweeping promenade lined with palm trees, modern art installations, and prime Red Sea views, best enjoyed at sunset.
  • King Fahd Fountain: The world’s tallest seawater fountain, shooting water over 300 metres into the air—a striking spectacle at night.
  • Obhur Creek: Escape the city with a day of sailing, snorkelling, or diving in the pristine turquoise waters north of Jeddah.
  • Art & culture: From the avant-garde Jameel Arts Centre to open-air sculptures by the likes of Henry Moore, Jeddah’s art scene is one of the region’s most vibrant.

Culinary culture

Jeddah’s food scene is a feast for the senses, reflecting its history as a crossroads of cultures. Start your morning with mutabbaq, a spiced savoury pancake, before indulging in fresh seafood along the coast—try sayadiyah, a fragrant rice and fish dish. For a local favourite, seek out a steaming plate of kabsa, a richly spiced rice dish often served with lamb or chicken. And for a sweet finish? Kunafa, a crispy, syrup-soaked pastry filled with cheese or cream, is a must.

Dive deeper:

To truly experience Jeddah, wander through Al-Balad after dusk, when the historic quarter glows under lanterns and locals gather for coffee. Explore Souk Al Alawi for vibrant fabrics and antiques, or unwind at a Red Sea beach club, diving into coral reefs before relaxing with a mocktail. The city effortlessly blends tradition and modernity, with art galleries, sleek cafés, and timeless experiences that showcase Jeddah's unique cultural charm while embracing its warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Good to know

Winter (November to March) offers the best weather, with mild temperatures and warm seas. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to get around, though Jeddah’s new metro is on the horizon. The currency is the Saudi riyal (SAR), and while Arabic is the official language, English is widely understood in tourist areas.

AlUla

AlUla is surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs, ancient tombs, and vast desert landscapes, it offers a truly extraordinary experience. Just 30 km away from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hegra, AlUla is a perfect blend of adventure and culture, inviting travellers to discover hidden gems and immerse themselves in the wonders of Saudi Arabia’s past and present.

Must-sees:

  • Hegra: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this ancient Nabatean city is famous for its stunning rock-cut tombs and dramatic desert views.
  • AlUla Old Town: Wander through this ancient, atmospheric town with its narrow alleyways, mud-brick houses, and historical sites.
  • Elephant Rock: A natural rock formation that resembles an elephant, offering a perfect spot for sunset views and photography.
  • AlUla Heritage Site: Explore the archaeological remnants of ancient civilisations that have shaped this fascinating area.

Culinary culture:

AlUla’s cuisine reflects the vibrant culture of Saudi Arabia, with a mix of traditional flavours and local ingredients. Don’t miss the chance to try Kabsa, a spiced rice dish served with lamb or chicken, and finish off with a sweet Kunafa, a pastry soaked in syrup. You’ll also find plenty of fresh fruit, dates, and locally grown herbs, perfect for a refreshing snack in the desert heat.

Dive deeper:

AlUla is a place where history and nature intertwine. Beyond the famous tombs of Hegra, the region offers an unparalleled opportunity to connect with Saudi Arabia’s ancient past through archaeological tours and rock art sites. The vast desert is also a playground for adventure seekers, with options for hiking, rock climbing, and even hot air balloon rides over the stunning landscapes. AlUla's vibrant cultural scene is thriving too, with art galleries, music festivals, and local craft markets bringing the area to life. The quiet beauty of the surroundings, combined with its rich history, makes AlUla a destination that beckons to those who seek both tranquillity and exploration.

Good to know:

AlUla is best visited in cooler months (October to March) to appreciate the desert’s beauty fully. While exploring, keep in mind that much of the region’s history is still being uncovered, making it an exciting destination for history buffs. Taxis and local tours are popular ways to get around, and the region is known for its hospitality, making it a welcoming destination for tourists.
