Discovering Salalah and the Treasures of the Sultanate —
Are you dreaming of a fascinating trip, far from the beaten track?
Between the crystal clear sea and the magnificent desert, the Sultanate of Oman will reveal its fascinating history and traditions...
We take you to Salalah, the second-largest city in Oman, with its rich cultural treasures and dramatic landscapes. Admire the majesty of the desert mountains, discover glistening white sandy beaches, and venture into the wadis.
Depending on your length of stay, the following excursions will be included:
- For all stays: Salalah Highlights, Salalah East Tour, Salalah West Tour & Jebel Safari
- For stays of 10 nights or more: The Empty Quarter and the Lost City of Ubar CAUTION: Some of these excursions are not suitable for pregnant women, people with a history of spinal problems, or people with limited mobility. There are also restrictions on wearing bikinis.
Salalah Highlights —
Our first stop is "The Museum of the Frankincense Land". Opened in July 2007 in the Al Balid Archaeological Park, a UNESCO heritage site in Salalah, the Museum of the Frankincense Land is the latest addition to Oman's heritage and cultural scene.
It houses two main halls. The History Hall, which depicts the geography, history of the ancient Frankincense trail and historical background of the Sultanate through various archaeological finds, and the Marine Hall, with displays on the development and complete history of Oman's maritime trade and shipbuilding industry. The carefully carved replicas of the ancient boats and ships of Oman's maritime trade offer a good reflection of how it really was.
Next, drive through lush green plantations of fruits and vegetables and make a brief stop to sample fresh coconut water at fruit stalls along the streets on the periphery of the ancient city of Salalah (Haffah). Make a photo stop at the impressive Sultan Qaboos Mosque, see the official palace of His Majesty the Sultan (Al Hosn Palace) and stroll through the old Haffa souk, famous for selling high quality incense and numerous other Dhofari traditional souvenirs.

From 10 nights only: The Empty Quarter & Lost City of Ubar —
Board a 4x4 vehicle and drive to the Qara mountain range with its spectacular views of the Salalah plains dotted with dense scrub and forest. After a short break in Thumrait town, famous as a Bedouin settlement, drive west on a paved road through the vast gravel desert of Al Nejd.
After a long journey from Salalah city, you will reach the first attraction in the desert, the Lost City of Ubar (UNESCO World Heritage Site). According to myth, the desert swallowed Ubar. The city literally sank without a trace and became the legendary "Atlantis of the sands". After a walk around the site, head to the Empty Quarter to experience the "largest sand desert in the world" by walking on fascinating sand dunes. A breathtaking overview of the vast desert awaits you at the top of the dunes. Afterwards, you will settle down for a typical Arabic lunch/picnic in the desert.
On the return to Salalah, you will drive into Wadi Dawka (UNESCO World Heritage Site), known as the Incense Wadi, which is also known as the largest collection of the naturally grown incense trees in the region.
