DAY 1: ARRIVE IN MUSCAT
Muscat is where ancient meets modern in Oman’s coastal capital, a city graced by whitewashed forts, lush parks, and a pristine bay. Wander the elegant Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, an architectural masterpiece, or lose yourself in the bustling Mutrah Souq where spices and silver dazzle in every corner. Muscat’s charm lies in its seamless blend of traditional Arabian culture and a relaxed seaside atmosphere, inviting exploration from serene beaches to the historic Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts.
Overnight at Muscat hotel.
DAY 2: MUSCAT
Start the Half-day tour of Muscat with a visit to the magnificent Grand Mosque, built with sandstone and marble. A beautiful Swarovski chandelier and a huge handmade Persian carpet adorn the main prayer hall. Pass through the Ministry district before visiting the Opera House. Next, stop for a photo opportunity at Al Alam palace, the palace of the Sultan, before continuing on to admire the two Portuguese forts, Mirani and Jalal, from the outside. Move on to the Bait Al Zubair Museum. This privately owned museum, located in the old town of Muscat, is known for its fine collection of traditional costumes, antique jewellery and weapons. Continue to Muttrah Souq, which is one of the oldest markets in Oman, dating back about two hundred years. Shop for artefacts, antiques, traditional textiles and jewellery in the bustling lanes of the traditional Arabian market. Return to the hotel.
Overnight at Muscat hotel.
Please note: For the Grand Mosque visit, women must cover their hair, arms, and legs; men must wear long trousers and a shirt. The Grand Mosque is not open for visits on Fridays.
DAY 3: MUSCAT - WADI AL ARBEIEEN - WADI TIWI - WAHIBA DESERT
Breakfast at the hotel.
Discover Wadi Al Arbeieen, one of Oman's most beautiful wadis. The wadi is located around 90 minutes outside of Muscat.
Continue to Wadi Tiwi, a spectacularly deep and narrow gorge carved out of the mountains, running between towering cliffs right down to the sea. The wadi is famed for its old traditional villages surrounded by lush plantations.
Then, head to the coastal city of Sur. Visit the dhow factory to see the construction of traditional wooden boats and take a photo opportunity at Al Ayjah lighthouse.
Finally, reach the entrance of Wahiba Sands (also known as Sharqiya Sands). The longitudinal dunes stretch 200 km long and 100 km wide until the Arabian Sea and have been home to the Bedouin for 7,000 years. You can venture up the high dunes and witness the unforgettable desert sunset, before gently driving through the sand dunes to reach the camp. (If you are travelling by bus, you will be transferred by 4x4 to the camp. If you are driving by yourself, we recommend booking a transfer to the camp).
Overnight at Wahiba Desert camp.
DAY 4: WAHIBA DESERT
Breakfast at the camp.
Visit the village of Al Hamra, one of the best-preserved old towns in the country. Take a stroll between the old abandoned buildings and mud houses.
Then, take a photo opportunity at Misfat Al Abriyeen. The village boasts amazing agricultural terraces, beautiful alleys, and old houses built on top of solid rocks. The old houses in Misfat Al Abriyeen are traditional mud houses with palm frond roofs and are unique in that they are built on solid rock foundations. Here you will also see traditional Omani irrigation channels (falaj system), where water is channelled from underground sources to support agriculture and domestic use.
Arrive at Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest point at 3,009m. It is truly an amazing sight at all times of the day. Enjoy the spectacular view of the “Grand Canyon”.
Overnight at Nizwa hotel.
DAY 5: NIZWA - BIRKAT AL MOUZ - JEBEL AKHDAR
Breakfast at the hotel.
Visit Nizwa, the former capital of Oman. Explore the 17th-century Nizwa fort with its vast tower and superb views of the oasis. In the bustling souq nearby, you will find local products such as Omani daggers (khanjar), copper, silver jewellery, livestock, fish, vegetables, and handicrafts for sale.
Then, go for a walk in Birkat Al Mouz, one of the most famous villages lying in ruins in Oman. With a large banana plantation and the scenic surroundings, the site is also home to the old falaj irrigation system, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an enchanting stop that will transport you back in time.
Overnight in Jebel Akhdar hotel.
DAY 6: JEBEL AKHDAR
Rising high into the Al Hajar Mountains, Jebel Akhdar, or the “Green Mountain,” surprises with its cool, lush terrain dotted with terraced farms and fragrant orchards. Oman
Oman is the Arabian Peninsula at its most authentic, an untouched tapestry of dramatic coastlines, rugged mountains, and desert silence, where ancient traditions still shape everyday life. This peaceful and welcoming land is a true hidden gem for travellers seeking something different.
From whitewashed villages clinging to canyon cliffs to winding souks echoing with the scent of frankincense, Oman offers a window into a world long shielded from mass tourism. Here, adventure is matched with warm hospitality, and every wadi, fort and winding road tells a story older than time.
Must-sees:
- Nizwa Fort: A magnificent 17th-century stronghold with sweeping views and a lively souk famed for silver jewellery and spices.
- Wadi Shab: A lush oasis nestled between cliffs, offering a refreshing trek through pools, waterfalls, and hidden caves.
- Jebel Akhdar: Known as the Green Mountain, this highland plateau bursts into bloom in spring and offers cool air and scenic hikes.
- Bahla Fort: A UNESCO-listed site, this vast mud-brick fortress is one of Oman’s finest examples of medieval Islamic architecture.
- Salalah & the Dhofar region: Visit during the khareef (monsoon) to see Oman turn green, with misty hills, waterfalls, and banana plantations.
Culinary culture:
Omani cuisine is as rich as its landscape. Begin your meal with dates and kahwa (spiced coffee), then dive into shuwa, marinated lamb slow-cooked in an underground oven for up to 48 hours. Savour mashuai, grilled kingfish with rice, or try majboos, a fragrant rice dish with meat or seafood. Halwa, a sweet gelatinous dessert flavoured with rosewater, saffron, and nuts, is an unmissable treat. In villages and cities alike, meals are often shared, symbolising the deep-rooted culture of hospitality.
Dive deeper:
To truly connect with Oman, go beyond the cities. Camp under a sky blazing with stars in the Wahiba Sands, or drive the serpentine coastal road from Sur to Salalah for jaw-dropping sea cliffs and hidden coves. Explore lesser-known ruins like Manah’s ghost town or take a moment in a remote mountain village where life moves at a gentler pace. Omanis take great pride in welcoming strangers, and a simple conversation may lead to a spontaneous invitation for tea or even a home-cooked meal.
Good to know:
Oman is best visited between October and April, when temperatures are cooler and perfect for outdoor exploration. The local currency is the Omani rial (OMR). Arabic is the official language, but English is widely spoken in towns and tourist areas. Dress modestly, especially in rural areas, and always ask permission before photographing people. Driving is the best way to explore Oman’s vast landscapes, with well-maintained roads and ample signage, just be sure to carry water and a full tank for remote areas.
