Amsterdam is a great place to visit in winter, with a number of seasonal markets and festivities, and a spectacular light festival which transforms the city into a magical winter wonderland.  Be sure to spot the beautiful light sculptures around Amsterdam’s historic Canal Ring, the River Amstel, and other special places around the city.

There are numerous small festive markets scattered throughout the city, such as at Westerpark's Westergasfabriek and at Museumplein, where you'll find an ice rink and beautiful stalls. Arguably one of the best markets to visit is the Kerstmarkt (only running from Friday 22nd-Saturday 23rd December). This cosy, indoor market is the perfect place to browse Christmas decorations, local cheeses, art and much more - or simply kick back and enjoy live music, a winter cinema, DJs, air hockey, and delicious street food.
