Your Destination —
Amsterdam is a city dominated by water and is often referred to as the 'Venice of the North' - as it boasts more than 100km of canals, a favourite pastime of any Amsterdam traveller is wandering the picturesque streets, bordered by the still-flowing waters of the Amstel river and the historic merchants houses of the inner city.
With a wealth of museums, galleries, and eclectic bars and restaurants, this is the perfect place for both culture-vultures and travellers looking for a thrilling city break. The first stop for any Amsterdam visitor should be Dam Square, truly the heart of the inner city, which is dominated by the facade of the 17th-century Royal Palace. Elsewhere, check out the immense collection of art at the historic Rijksmuseum - including some iconic Rembrandts - or thought-provoking pieces at the ultra-modern Stedelijk Museum, both of which are housed on the Museumplein, a 30-minute walk from the city centre.
Nearby, the Vondelpark is the perfect place to relax and rest your legs before grabbing a drink at the bustling Leidseplein or in a trendy bar in the popular neighbourhood De Pijp. Alternatively, escape the city for a day with an excursion to the world-famous Keukenhof Gardens, or get a taste for traditional Dutch life in the 17th and 18th centuries at the living museum Zaanse Schans, which is home to quaint windmills and traditional shops.
