After an early breakfast, start out on your 2-hour journey on a day trip to discover Melaka, one of the most historic Malaysian cities. Melaka was founded by a Hindu prince in the 14th century but its strategic location on the Strait of Melaka, which was a vital route in the medieval spice trade, made it an attractive prize for European colonists. From 1511 to 1957, it was ruled first by the Portuguese, then the Dutch and finally the British, each leaving a legacy that can still be spotted today, from the ruins of A Famosa Fort to Queen Victoria’s Fountain. The result is a fascinating multi-cultural city that will captivate your heart. On this excursion, you will visit the top attractions in Melaka. Head to the Dutch-era St John’s Fort for a panoramic view of the city - on a clear day, you can see Indonesia on the other side of the strait. Discover Bandar Hilir, the city’s oldest area, and climb St Paul’s Hill, where the ruins of St Paul’s Church stand, before continuing to the Porta de Santiago, which is all that remains of the Portuguese-built A Famosa. Visit the ‘antiques row’ of the always colourful Jonker Street, where shops and stalls will tempt you with their historic and folkloric wares. Complete the tour with stops at Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the Tranquerah Mosque - which unusually has a pagoda instead of a minaret - the three-century-old St Peter’s Church and the haunting Bukit Cina, where Chinese burial sites are scattered on a barren hill. Return to Kuala Lumpur in the evening.
Overnight in Kuala Lumpur
After breakfast, depart on a journey that will take you towards the eastern suburbs of the city. The highlights include a visit to the Royal Selangor where the art of pewter crafting will be demonstrated and the Batik Factory to witness how wax and dye are used in the painting process. Later, ascend 272 steps to the limestone Batu Caves Temple. The limestone forming Batu Caves is said to be around 400million years old and its cavernous interior is home to Hindu deities. Rising almost 100m above the ground, the Batu Caves temple complex consists of three main caves and a few smaller ones. The biggest, referred to as Cathedral Cave or Temple Cave, has a very high ceiling and features ornate Hindu shrines. Many of the shrines relate the story of Lord Murugan'svictory over the demon Soorapadman.
Highlights:
- Embassy Row where diplomats from all over the world converge
- The Royal Selangor Pewter - where pure tin, antimony and copper are fashioned into exquisite and stylish items
- Batik Centre - see how batik is printed on exotic materials like silk
- Batu Caves - a cluster of limestone caves with 272 steps, house the Hindu deity, Lord Subramaniam. During the religious festival (Thaipusam), devotees enter a trance & carry the "kavadi" for Thanksgiving
Note:
- Tour is not available during the Thaipusam festival on 21 Jan 2019 (actual day + 01-day pre and post). Actual dates to be advised, please check with us at time of booking
