Your Itinerary —
Arrive at Delhi Airport in the morning, where a representative will meet you at the terminal and transfer you to your hotel.
Settle into the capital city, for a journey across the fascinating historical sites of medieval north India. Wars were fought and rulers changed in Delhi but ordinary lives were lived in relative continuity. Glimpses of these can be seen even today as the character of the city underwent massive changes in the last decades. In the lands fabled to have seen seven cities, signs of the old are continuously jostling with the new, presenting an ever-fascinating panorama.
Spend the day relaxing at the hotel.
Today you will enjoy a full day combined city tour of both Old and New Delhi. The guide will meet you at your hotel at around 9 am.
In Old Delhi, visit the 17th century Jama Masjid and stroll through the narrow, winding lanes of bustling Chandni Chowk. You'll also have the option to take a rickshaw ride through the bazaars. Visit the Mughal Empir's most opulent fort, the Red Fort, for a photo stop, and visit Raj Ghat where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated.
In the afternoon, continue to New Delhi. Drive past the Presidential Palace (the one-time imperial residence of the British viceroys) the India Gate (a memorial raised in honour of Indian soldiers in the Afghan war) and drive along the Rajpath past the Parliament House. Visit Qutub Minar, the 12th century tower of victory that stands as a prototype of all towers in India. You'll also get the chance to visit the 16th century Humayun's Tomb, a precursor to the Taj Mahal.
Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, proceed to Agra where you will check-in to your hotel with the assistance of a representative.
Agra stands on the right bank of the river Yamuna and was once the seat of the Mughal rulers, the zenith of art and an Enshrined romance. A town famous for its beautiful medieval monuments, the passion of the Mughals for building endowed Agra with some of the loveliest buildings in the world.
In the afternoon, you will pay a visit to Agra Fort, where the Emperor Shah Jahan, imprisoned by his son, watched from a distance as his Taj Mahal was built in memory of his beloved wife.
In the early evening, enjoy a visit to the Taj Mahal at sunset (closed on Fridays). Taj Mahal means "Crown Palace" and is, in fact, the most well preserved and architecturally beautiful tomb in the world. The English poet, Sir Edwin Arnold, as “Not a piece of architecture, best describes it as other buildings are, but the proud passions of an emperor’s love wrought in living stones." The dome is made of white marble, but the tomb is set against the plain across the river and it is this background that works its magic of colours that, through their reflection, change the view of the Taj. The colours change at different hours of the day and during different seasons. Like a jewel, the Taj sparkles in moonlight when the semi-precious stones inlaid into the white marble on the main mausoleum catch the glow of the moon. The Taj is pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden when the moon shines. These changes, they say, depict the different moods of a woman.
Overnight at the hotel in Agra. Travelling distance approx. 204km (4-hour drive).
After a delicious breakfast, drive to Dholpur, "The Land of the Red Stone". The travelling distance is around 55km (approx. a 1.5-hour drive). On arrival in Dholpur, you will proceed to check-in at your hotel.
Dholpur is a sleepy, small town in Rajasthan, full of historical forts and monuments. It is very close to the border of neighbouring state Uttar Pradesh and is close to Agra and Gwalior. Dhopur is also famous for its wonderful distinctive sandstone, used to build the famous Red Fort in Delhi. The town is situated beside the Chambal River, and travellers often visit in order to spot alligators and rare birds.
In the afternoon, visit the National Chambal Sanctuary on either a boat or jeep safari, depending on weather conditions, and spot marsh crocodiles and gharials basking on the sandbanks!
Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, check-out of your hotel and proceed to Jaipur, visiting Fatehpur Sikri en-route. The travelling distance is around 195km (approx. a 4-hour drive).
Fatehpur Sikri is a deserted red sandstone city built by the Great Mughal Emperor Akbar as his capital and palace in the 19th century. It was abandoned soon after it was built when the local wells went dry, and it remains today in the same condition that it was left in 300 years ago. It is complete with palaces and mosques and was originally a town larger than London when it was originally constructed. Today, it is an extraordinary place to wander around, with its buildings in near-perfect condition.
Continue to Jaipur, where you will check-in at your hotel and be met by a representative who will assist you. The rest of your day is to be spent at leisure.
Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, spend the day on a guided sightseeing tour of Jaipur.
To begin with, visit the capital of Amber to witness the beautiful Amber Fort. Maharaja Mansingh, Mughal Emperor Akbar’s most successful General, started the construction of Amber Fort in the 17th century. Before the City Palace was constructed in Jaipur, Amber was the seat of power. The fort is surrounded by fortified battlements and overlooks the Moat Lake. Ruins and remains are spread over the Aravali hills and sprawling crenulated walls lattice the surrounding area.
A jeep will spare you the trouble of reaching the top of the fortress. Once at the top, stroll through the sprawling complex of courtyards and halls. Many of the rooms have delightful wall paintings, with precious stones and mirrors inlaid in the walls. Most fascinating, perhaps, is the Sheesh Mahal (hall of mirrors) where a single lamplight is reflected in the many mirrors, lighting up the room. En-route to Amber Fort you will stop and see the `Palace of Winds’, otherwise known as Hawa Mahal.
In the afternoon, visit the City Palace, which is an overwhelming complex of exquisite palaces, gardens and courtyards, decorative art and carved doorways. The palace museum houses collections of rare manuscripts, armoury, costumes, carpets and miniature paintings. Jaipur's Jantar Mantar is the most famous of five observatories built by Sawai Jai Singh in India.
Overnight at the hotel.
This morning, after breakfast, proceed to Vanaashrya, an extraordinary tent accommodation. The travelling distance is around 120km (approx. 3.5-hour drive).
En-route to Vanaashrya, pay a visit to the iconic Bhangarh Fort, which locals report is still haunted to this day! According to legend, there was a black magic sorcerer who cursed the residents of the palace, claiming that their spirits would haunt the fort forever. This is said to be the most haunted place in India and amongst the world's most haunted places.
After your visit to Bhangarh Fort, transfer to Vanaashrya where you will check-in, followed by lunch. Later in the afternoon, enjoy an authentic camel cart ride that will take you to a local village where you will embark on an immersive stroll with some local villagers. Afterwards, enjoy an evening cooking demonstration before your dinner.
Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, check out and transfer back to Delhi. The travelling distance is around 214km (approx. 4.5-hour drive). On arrival in Delhi, spend the rest of the day at leisure to explore the city.
Day 9: Delhi - Departure
A representative will meet you and transfer you back to the airport for your flight back to the UK. Hotel check-out time is 12pm.
