6-night road trip

Day 1: Arrival

  • After landing at Keflavík airport, collect your hire car from the airport and head for your hotel.
  • Drive along the mystical lava landscapes of the south coast to the charming village of Hveragerði, where you will spend the night.
  • The road passes rocky beaches with thundering waves, leading to Hveragerði, a charming town with a unique twist. Situated atop a geothermal area, it’s known as the ‘flower village’ due to its greenhouses heated by nearby hot springs.

Overnight in the Hveragerði region.

Day 2: Gullfoss - Geysir - South Coast

  • Today we recommend exploring the stunning sites of Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir hot springs area.
  • Drive along the picturesque south coast and the area near the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano. We suggest stopping at the interactive LAVA Centre, where you can learn about the powerful volcanic and tectonic forces that have shaped Iceland and the Earth.
  • Your journey will take you to the magnificent waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss and the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
  • Stop off in the seaside village of Vík to discover Reynisfjara, a spectacular stretch of coastline between glacier-clad mountains, rugged cliffs and black sand beaches.

Overnight in the Vík region.

Day 3: Vatnajökull National Park - Ice Lagoon - Vik

  • Why not explore Vatnajökull National Park today, home to Europe’s largest glacier? Discover the breathtaking Skaftafell region, a lush oasis nestled between icy landscapes. For an unforgettable experience, consider joining a guided glacier hike.
  • Then we suggest continuing to the glistening icebergs of the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and enjoying the breathtaking views. If you're lucky, you might even spot a few seals sunbathing.
  • Close to Glacier Lagoon is Diamond Beach, where glistening glacier chunks are perched on the volcanic black sand coastline.
  • Return to the charming village of Vík in the late afternoon.

Overnight in the Vík region.

Day 4: Þingvellir National Park - Borgarfjörður

  • We encourage you to visit Þingvellir National Park, home to Iceland's ancient Viking parliament and a natural wonder.
  • Why not journey through the Hvalfjörður fjord or take the adventurous Kaldidalur wilderness trail (open June to August, requiring a 4x4, category F or higher recommended)? Your destination awaits in the picturesque Borgarfjörður region and Reykholt, the historic home of 13th-century leader and Saga author Snorri Sturluson.
  • Finally, we suggest visiting Hraunfossar Falls, where glacial water rushes magnificently through lava formations.

Overnight in the Borgarfjörður region.

  • Enjoy a full day exploring the natural wonders of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, home to Snæfellsjökull National Park. Known as ‘Iceland in a walnut shell’, it offers a glimpse of the country’s diverse landscapes.
  • We suggest:
    • Visiting the sea cliffs of Arnarstapi, home to seabirds, and hike the 4.3 km nature trail to Hellnar. The region is dominated by Snæfellsjökull, a glacier-capped volcano, said to be the home of a guardian spirit. Driving through the park for stunning views of the mountain from various angles.
    • Discovering Djúpalónssandur’s black pebble beach and unique rock formations, then drive along the north coast through fishing villages. Look out for Kirkjufell Mountain, and stopping at Ólafsvík for whale watching.

    • You can choose to take the south coast road to the charming coastal villages of Stokkseyri and Eyrarbakki, both of which have pretty old buildings and excellent seafood restaurants.
    • If you like local history, another option would be a guided tour of Laugarvatnshellir cave in the Golden Circle region (summer season).
    • You can also visit the charming Friðheimar farm. At Friðheimar, you can enjoy a tomato lunch in the greenhouse café (meal must be booked in advance).

Day 6: From South to West

  • Head back to the South Shore region, visiting places you may not have seen on Day 4. This is a good day to try activities such as off-road driving on a black sand beach, snowmobiling on the Mýrdalsjökull glacier or kayaking on the Sólheimajökull glacier lagoon.
  • Your destination is the magnificent Borgarfjörður region, with its enchanting landscapes, crafts and local cuisine.

Day 8: Borgarfjörður

  • In Borgarfjörður, we recommend visiting the colourful lava cave of Víðgelmir or riding in a special truck on the Langjökull glacier to admire a unique ice tunnel and cave and see a glacier from the inside.
  • The region features two stunning waterfalls: Hraunfossar, where glacial water flows through lava, and the brilliant blue Barnafoss. Visit Deildartunguhver, Europe’s fastest hot spring, and relax at Krauma geothermal baths, which use its water combined with cool mountain springs.
  • Continue to Reykjavík, Iceland's colourful capital.

Overnight in the Reykjavík region.

Your destination

Iceland

Iceland, a land of striking contrasts, invites travellers to experience its otherworldly beauty, where glaciers meet volcanic landscapes and folklore blends with modern life. This remote Nordic island offers a unique fusion of dramatic scenery, geothermal wonders, and a deep-rooted cultural heritage shaped by centuries of storytelling and exploration.

Must-sees:

  • Þingvellir National Park – A UNESCO-listed site where history and geology converge, home to the ancient Viking parliament and the meeting point of two tectonic plates.
  • Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon – A mesmerising expanse of floating icebergs, where visitors can witness nature's raw beauty and perhaps spot a few seals basking on the ice.
  • Reykjanes Peninsula – Often overlooked, this rugged coastal region is dotted with steaming fumaroles, dramatic cliffs, and Iceland’s famed Blue Lagoon, an oasis of warm, mineral-rich waters.

Culinary culture:

Iceland’s cuisine reflects its harsh yet bountiful environment, with fresh seafood, free-roaming lamb, and innovative uses of local ingredients. Traditional dishes such as plokkfiskur (creamy fish stew) and rye bread baked using geothermal heat are must-tries, while modern Reykjavik restaurants experiment with Nordic flavours, bringing creativity to every plate.

Dive deeper:

Beyond its famous landmarks, Iceland’s lesser-known treasures reward those willing to explore. The Westfjords remain an untouched paradise, with towering cliffs, remote fishing villages, and Europe’s westernmost point, Látrabjarg, home to vast colonies of puffins. In the north, the town of Akureyri offers a glimpse into Icelandic daily life, with its botanical gardens flourishing just below the Arctic Circle.

Good to know:

The ideal time to visit is late spring to early autumn for long daylight hours and accessible roads, while winter offers the mesmerising Northern Lights. Iceland’s landscapes are as unpredictable as its weather—layered clothing and sturdy footwear are essential for exploring its rugged terrain. Car rentals are popular, but the country's extensive network of guided tours ensures a hassle-free journey into the wild.
