Your destinations —
Siem Reap
A bustling resort town in northwestern Cambodia, Siem Reap has been beckoning travellers for decades, in part thanks to its proximity to breathtaking Angkor, once the capital city of the Khmer Empire. However, crowds are still drawn to the city centre, which boasts a mix of French colonial and Chinese architecture, as well as lively restaurants, popular backpacking hotels, and local markets.
Must-sees:
- Angkor Wat: the world’s largest religious monument, stands as a breathtaking testament to Cambodia’s grandeur and spiritual legacy.
- Angkor Thom: the ancient walled city, with its iconic Bayon Temple, offers a surreal experience with towering stone faces and intricate carvings.
- Ta Prohm: famously known for its intertwining trees and ruins, provides a glimpse into the incredible power of nature reclaiming ancient structures.
Culinary culture:
Siem Reap is a haven for food lovers, blending traditional Cambodian flavors with influences from surrounding regions. Delight in amok, a rich and fragrant fish curry, or savor khmer red curry, a mild but aromatic dish. Don’t miss bai sach chrouk, a beloved breakfast of grilled pork and rice. The bustling night markets also offer a chance to try lok lak (stir-fried beef) and exotic fruits like durian and mangoes.
Dive deeper:
For those eager to discover more, venture beyond the famous temples. Explore the peaceful Angkor National Museum, which showcases Cambodia’s ancient civilization through stunning exhibits. Stroll through the vibrant Siem Reap Old Market to experience the lively trade of spices, textiles, and local handicrafts. For a more serene experience, take a boat trip on Tonle Sap Lake and witness the floating villages.
Good to know:
The local currency is the Cambodian Riel (KHR), but US dollars are widely accepted. Siem Reap has a tropical climate, with the best time to visit being between November and February when the weather is cooler and dry. While the city is small and easily walkable, tuk-tuks and bicycles are popular choices for getting around. Be sure to dress modestly when visiting temples.
