This is an exquisite example of a Colonial town which juts out into the island-studded bay. Brightly coloured buildings and terracotta roofs contrast beautifully with the deep green of the mountains beyond, making this region a beautiful break from the busy streets of Rio de Janeiro. Visitors can easily spend a day roaming Paraty's cobbled streets and trying local delicacies at one of the city's traditional cafes which cascade onto the streets.

Day 1: Rio de Janeiro - Paraty
Take your private transfer from your hotel in Rio de Janeiro to your hotel in Paraty. Upon arrival, enjoy a private walking city tour to the historic centre of Paraty and enjoy a tasting of cachaça. Overnight at Pousada da Marquesa (or similar).

Santa Teresa, known as the "Montmartre Carioca", is one of the most artistic and preserved areas of Rio de Janeiro. Steep and cobbled streets, houses from the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, give the impression of being in one of the small towns in the interior of Brazil and make places a place where tourists and locals have a feeling of going back in time.
 
In Santa Teresa are also consulates, headquarters of multinational corporations as well as residences of the high society of Rio. In Largo dos Guimarães Square, 50 meters from Santa Teresa Hotel Rio Mgallery by Sofitel 5 *, you will find most of the area's tourist and bohemian attractions. Restaurants, traditional bars, cinemas and shops make up this bucolic corner of Santa Teresa. The price includes an accredited local guide (French or English), an artist workshop visits.

There has been an increase in reported cases of yellow fever, particularly in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais. Visit the NaTHNaC website for information on yellow fever vaccination recommendations for British travellers. Please note that Rio de Janeiro state authorities recommend that all visitors to the state, including to the island of Ilha Grande, are vaccinated against yellow fever.

UK health authorities have classified Brazil as having a risk of Zika virus transmission. You should follow the advice of the National Travel Health Network and Centre.

Malaria is present in parts of the country

Dengue fever is particularly common during the rainy season (from November to March).

You should take steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes and for more information and advice, visit the NaTHNaC website.

If vaccinations or other preventive measures are required, you will need to visit your health professional at least 8 weeks before your trip. In the event that you are referred to a medical facility for treatment, you should contact your insurance/medical assistance company immediately.
