Welcome to Uganda
Uganda is a country of staggering diversity, where lush rainforests meet wide savannah plains and the snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains rise above the clouds. Known as the Pearl of Africa, this landlocked nation offers a deeply rewarding experience for those looking to combine wildlife, adventure and warm, authentic encounters. From the gentle giants of Bwindi to the mirror-like waters of Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda promises moments of awe at every turn.
Don’t miss
- Trekking through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to encounter mountain gorillas in their misty habitat
- Cruising the Nile in Murchison Falls National Park, where hippos jostle for space and crocodiles laze on sandbanks
- Exploring the crater lakes and lush tea estates of Fort Portal
- Hiking in the Rwenzori Mountains, often called the Mountains of the Moon
- Watching tree-climbing lions in the remote Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park
Culinary culture
Ugandan cuisine is rich in flavour and deeply rooted in tradition. Staples like matoke (steamed green bananas), posho (maize porridge), and groundnut sauce are served with a variety of stews. Roadside vendors offer quick bites such as Rolex – a rolled chapati stuffed with eggs and vegetables. In Kampala and Entebbe, a growing restaurant scene blends local ingredients with global influence, offering everything from spicy tilapia to Indian-inspired curries.
Dive deeper
Beyond its national parks and lakes, Uganda is a country of storytellers, dancers and craftspeople. In small towns and villages, you’ll find vibrant community theatres, bark cloth makers, and centuries-old traditions kept alive through music and oral history. The kingdom of Buganda, with its own language and cultural identity, offers a window into the layered history of the region.
Good to know
The Ugandan shilling is the local currency. Dry seasons (December–February and June–August) offer the best travel conditions. Minibuses and boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) are common transport, but private hire is recommended for longer journeys
