Your destination —
Belgrade
Belgrade is a city of bold contrasts and buzzing energy, where ancient fortresses overlook riverside nightlife, and brutalist blocks stand beside grand Habsburg facades. Serbia’s capital is one of Europe’s oldest cities, yet it pulses with youthful energy and a rebellious spirit. Here, cafés spill out onto cobbled streets, the scent of strong coffee and grilled meat fills the air, and music drifts from floating clubs moored on the Danube.
Must-sees:
- Kalemegdan Fortress: Perched above the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, this historic stronghold offers stunning views and a journey through centuries of history.
- Skadarlija: Belgrade’s bohemian heart, this cobbled quarter is packed with traditional taverns, street musicians, and old-world charm.
- Republic Square & Knez Mihailova Street: The city’s central hub and main pedestrian street, where elegant architecture meets buzzing urban life.
- Saint Sava Temple: One of the world’s largest Orthodox churches, its shining white façade and massive dome dominate the skyline.
- Museum of Yugoslavia: Dive into the country’s complex past with exhibits dedicated to Tito and the former Yugoslav era.
Culinary culture:
Food in Belgrade is hearty, flavourful, and deeply social. Try ćevapi, grilled minced meat sausages often served with fluffy bread and onions, or sarma, cabbage rolls filled with spiced meat and rice. Wash it down with a shot of rakija, Serbia’s potent fruit brandy, and finish with krempita, a creamy custard slice beloved by locals.
Dive deeper:
Beyond the sights, Belgrade’s soul lives in its riverside splavovi (barge clubs), vibrant markets, and relaxed café culture. Explore Zemun for Austro-Hungarian charm, and don’t miss a sunset stroll along the Sava Promenade—where history, hospitality, and modern energy collide.
Good to know:
Belgrade is walkable and friendly. Spring and early autumn offer the best weather. The local currency is the Serbian dinar (RSD).
