Your Itinerary In Detail

Day 1 : Arrival in Senegal - Lac Rose (about 55kms - 1 hour)

You will be met at the airport and driven to Lake Retba, the real name of Pink Lake. It is known for its exceptional characteristics of taking on a purplish pink colour and having a salinity higher than the Dead Sea.

You will settle in a camp in the middle of nature: Le Gîte du Lac (or Keur Salim or similar), on a dune overlooking a banana plantation, on the edge of the lake.

Depending on your arrival time, you will enjoy a dinner without drinks (before midnight) or a light snack (after midnight).

Day 2: Dakar - Gorée (80km/3h + 1h Chaloupe round trip)

Drive to Dakar.

You will enjoy a guided tour of the city in the early morning: the Place de l'Indépendance and its old administrative buildings, a testimony to the capital of French West Africa, the town hall and the railway station... There are many things to discover!

You will then have lunch in a typical restaurant on the island of Gorée before strolling through the flowery streets. At 4:30 pm you will take the boat back and continue your discovery of the cornice offering a view on the Madeline islands and the mosques. Climb 200 steps to reach the base of the statue!

Back at the Gite at about 6pm you will enjoy an evening animated by a griot: you will enjoy Fulani tales and songs to the rhythm of traditional instruments with participative dance around a campfire, accompanied by 3 Senegalese teas under the stars.

Tasting of a Senegalese speciality based on fonio, local micro-cereal, for your dinner.

Night on the shores of the Pink Lake.

Day 3: Pink Lake

Cross the lake in a "salt canoe" to discover the salt collectors. Mamadou, your local guide, explains the origin of the lake and its colour. Lunch with exotic flavours in a restaurant on a promontory of shells on the edge of the lake.

We propose a free afternoon: relax on the beach or in the garden, swim in the ocean, and learn to play local games. At the end of the afternoon, enjoy an initiation to African percussion with a sunset background.

Day 4: 100% Authentic Africa in Rufisque - Kayar Fishermen - Lompoul Desert (145kms, 4 hours)

Take a local taxi to Rufisque, a former colonial trading post, where the presence of old trading houses is a reminder of its rich past.

Its market, spread out in the streets and under a hall, offers all sorts of products: vegetables, spices, fabrics, snake skins, ancestral remedies, aphrodisiac powders and other gri-gri... a sensory experience! You will learn to haggle using the Wolof words you have learned, to buy the ingredients for the evening meal.

For lunch, you will share your meal Senegalese style, on a mat spread on the ground, served in common trays. In the early afternoon, we cross the dunes of "Paris Dakar" in a 4x4 truck to reach the endless beach of the Grande Côte and then the cart tracks to reach the largest artisanal fishing centre, Kayar.

Your village guide will comment on the arrival of the fishermen.

Continue to the desert camp and learn how to make the traditional bread "Tapalapa".

Your Saharan night will take place in an oasis and you will be able to experience sleeping in a typical tent!

Day 5: Lompoul - Langue de Barbarie - Sowène (60kms - 1h30)

Take the road again through typically Sahelian landscapes, sparse with acacia trees and crossed by herds of dromedaries. Arrival at the old mouth of the Senegal River where the Langue de Barbarie joined the continent following the creation of an artificial mouth south of Saint-Louis.

A "Robinson Crusoe" barbecue with grilled fish is offered on the beach in the shade of the filaos to fully enjoy this wild setting. Relaxation and swimming in this new lagoon and observation of many birds. Walking along the cart tracks along the river, often shaded by filaos. We may meet fishermen, farmers or villagers travelling by cart.

You will take your vehicle to cross the region of Gandiolais, region of Niayes, "small oasis" of greenery fed by wells in the middle of the dunes. Arrival at the lodge, located on the bank of the Senegal River, in an exceptional site, offering a view that embraces the crystalline waters of the river, the Langue de Barbarie on the opposite bank and the ocean on the horizon. You will settle in a "Cabane" mounted on a floor on stilts.

Day 6: Saint-Louis (60km/1h30)

Departure for Saint-Louis where your guide will share his knowledge with you.Stopover for European slave trade ships, first capital of French West Africa, stopover for Mermoz's Aeropostale, the island has preserved important testimonies of its prestigious past: La Gouvernance, Faidherbe Square and its two barracks, the Cathedral ....

Lunch at your leisure (not included) in one of the many restaurants in the heart of the island. Extend your immersion with visits!

You will then stroll through the shops and enjoy your afternoon before returning to your lodge.

Day 7: Free day at Sowene

Free day at the Lodge (lunch included). Possibility to enjoy the quietness and the beauty of the place, to savour the infinity pool overhanging the river, to join the Langue de Barbarie on the opposite bank for a swim or a walk on the wild oceanic beach, to go for a walk in the surrounding nature or on the banks of the river in the shade of the filaos...

Overnight at the Lodge.

Day 8: Free morning in Sowène - Departure (220 kms / 3 hours)

Free morning at the Lodge. Possibility to enjoy the quietness and the beauty of the place, to savour the overflowing swimming pool overhanging the river, to join the Langue de Barbarie on the opposite bank for a swim or a walk on the wild oceanic beach, to go for a walk in the surrounding nature or on the banks of the river in the shade of the filaos...

After lunch, departure for Thiès by road. Cross Tivaouane, holy city of the Tidjanes brotherhood, the most represented in Senegal.

Stop at the basketry market at the entrance to the city of Thiès. You will visit this city with its shaded streets and its beautiful central market before descending the Thies plateau and enjoying a superb panorama.

Optional suggestion and with extra charge: Safari at the Bandia animal reserve.
