Your Destinations —
In the far North of India, in the region of Jammu and Kashmir lies Ladakh - a former Buddhist Kingdom that remains totally untouched by tourism. Shrouded in mystery and legend, this awe-inspiring landscape of jagged mountains and desert dunes is awash with tales of mercenaries and monks, who traversed the land in search of health, wealth and enlightenment.
Located in a small valley just to the north of the Indus River is Leh, the capital of Ladakh, a region often referred to as ‘Little Tibet’ which marks the boundary between the peaks of the western Himalaya and the vast Tibetan Plateau.
Leh was only opened to tourists in 1974, and until 1947 it had close trading relations with Central Asia, with yak trains setting off from the Leh bazaar to complete the stages over the Karakoram Pass to Yarkand and Kashgar. The town itself is dominated by the nine-storey Leh Palace, home of the Ladakhi royal family before they were exiled to Stok in the 1830s.
Discover the incredible scenery and centuries-old culture of Ladakh on this private tour, which explores some of the fascinating monuments and ancient monasteries that continue to preserve the traditional art forms, fairs and festivals of the area.
The Indian capital, is steeped in a glorious, but turbulent, history. In the pulsating old city, the mighty Mughal-built Red Fort and the vast Jama Masjid mosque are divided by Chandni Chowk’s teeming bazaars.
New Delhi provides a fascinating contrast, with the grand Lutyens-designed government buildings, the majestic India Gate memorial, the thriving hub of Connaught Circus and broad tree-lined avenues, which give much of the city a park-like feel. Visitors should head for the gracefully preserved Humayun’s tomb, an early example of Mughal architecture, and the 13th-century red sandstone tower of Qutb Minar.
