Laos
Laos, the mountainous heart of Southeast Asia, offers a serene retreat, nestled as the only landlocked country in the region. With Thailand to the west, Laos is rich in natural beauty, from its lush landscapes to its winding rivers. Deeply rooted in Buddhism, the country's spiritual and cultural heritage is evident in its everyday life, creating a peaceful atmosphere that permeates every corner.
Must-sees:
- Luang Prabang: A UNESCO World Heritage site, this enchanting town is known for its golden temples, colonial architecture, and the stunning Kuang Si Waterfalls.
- Vang Vien: Famous for its dramatic limestone karsts and riverside scenery, it's a paradise for outdoor activities like kayaking, trekking, and hot-air ballooning.
- Plain of Jars: This mysterious archaeological site is home to thousands of large stone jars scattered across the landscape, shrouded in ancient history and intrigue.
Culinary culture:
Laos' cuisine is a delightful blend of fresh herbs, rice, and bold flavours. Dishes like larb (a spicy minced meat salad), papaya salad, and sticky rice are staples. A unique culinary experience can be found in the traditional Lao barbecue, where diners cook their own meat and vegetables. For dessert, try khao nom kok, sweet coconut-filled rice cakes. Laos' coffee, grown in the highlands, is also gaining international recognition.
Dive deeper:
To truly experience Laos, venture off the beaten path. Explore the tranquil 4,000 Islands in the Mekong River, a serene archipelago in the south where you can cycle between sleepy villages. Visit Xe Pian National Protected Area for a glimpse into the country’s diverse wildlife and lush landscapes. Alternatively, explore the Buddhist caves in Vientiane, where sacred shrines dot the limestone cliffs, creating a peaceful and meditative experience.
Good to know:
The official currency is the Lao Kip (LAK), though US dollars are accepted in many places. The ideal time to visit is from November to February, when the weather is cooler and ideal for outdoor activities. Travel around Laos is best done by bus, tuk-tuk, or boat, with scenic routes offering glimpses of the stunning countryside. Be sure to dress modestly when visiting temples and religious sites.
Cambodia
Cambodia, a country steeped in ancient history and vibrant traditions, offers a remarkable travel experience. From the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat to the bustling markets and tranquil countryside, Cambodia promises a journey through time, culture, and nature. For a sobering insight into recent history, the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek are essential. Festivals add another layer: the Khmer New Year in April fills the streets with games and water fights, Pchum Ben at the end of September is a moment of deep spiritual reflection, and the Water Festival in November lights up the rivers with dragon boat races and fireworks.
