Your Destinations —
With its Mayan past and Latin present, Guatemala is characterised by diversity. It enchants with its natural beauty and grand colonial architecture – from the much-photographed Semuc Champey swimming hole to the multi-hued buildings found in towns such as Cobán . Vistas of head-turning landscapes are juxtaposed with cultural quirks that allude to Mayan traditions and contemporary Latin and North American influences.
Arriving in Antigua, Guatemala, is like falling into a time warp and ending up in 16th- or 17th-century Spain. Colonial-style mansions line the landscape, shrouded by eight-foot walls that hide pools, gardens brimming with multitudes of flowers and, beyond, elaborate hand-carved woodwork..
There’s so much to Honduras that often gets overlooked and mustn’t. Having been heaved out from under the radar, it now stands taller as home to the Maya ruins of Copán, the diving spots of the Bay Islands and the exquisite scenery of multiple national parks. Be transported to a long-bygone era at the Copán Ruins, the aftermath of a Mayan City with underground tunnels that tell a story; dive to new depths in Roatan and meander through a maze of corals; and finally, marvel at mountains during hiking trails that will take you up to the clouds.
Put aside the headlines and the history associated with El Salvador and you’ll open yourself up to a small country with such immense beauty that its rocky times become obsolete. El Salvador is home to wonderfully friendly locals, imposing volcanoes, bucolic coffee plantations and untouched beaches with surf-perfect waves. It is entirely unique, and its off-the-beaten-track appeal stretches far enough to make you feel like you’re making new discoveries. A particular highlight is undoubtedly Joya de Cerén – known as the "Pompeii of America", and announced as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its fascinating exposure to Mayan life.
