Estonia's capital has been undergoing an elegant restoration in recent years. It is a quaint, cultural and medieval town, overlooked by the crenelated walls of Toompea Castle and the domed St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. A one-time Hanseatic port, the Old Town is a jumble of gable-roofed merchant's houses, narrow cobbled streets, concealed courtyards and fortified buildings. 

Surrounded by the old city wall and interspersed with watchtowers, St Catherine's Passage with its craft workshops comes highly recommended; the viewing platform at Kohtuotsa offers staggering views of the Old Town's rooftops and towers contrasted against the modern city skyline. In the Old Town Square, you can readily imagine it as the market and meeting place it was in medieval times.

Tallinn Christmas Markets 2019 (15th Nov-7th Jan)

The Christmas market in Tallinn runs from the middle of November through to the beginning of January. A spectacular calendar of events, including appearances by Santa Claus and a singing Christmas tree, accompanies this magical Christmas market.

Organisers plan a Christmas tree-decorating contest and other games. The decorated stalls at the Tallinn Christmas market sell Christmas decorations, gifts, and food. Handmade Estonian crafts will be of special interest to those looking to find a suitable souvenir from their trip to this lovely city!
