Your Destinations —
With the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem, the Tarangire River is a haven for the herds of animals that come looking desperately for water in the dry season.
Here you see vast numbers of elephants, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle and hartebeest migrating over the parched, red earth towards the last remaining sources of water; the lagoons and the river, a shadow of their wet-season-selves. Whilst in the rainy season, you will see these seasonal visitors scatter over a 20,000 km² range.
Coined “the loveliest I had seen in Africa” by Ernest Heminway, Lake Manyara is a scenic gem, expanding 50km along the base of the golden 600m high Rift Valley escarpment.
With lush jungle-like groundwater forest, an alkaline lake, grassy floodplains, all set against the jagged blue volcanic peaks of the Maasai Steppes, Manyara offers a virtual microcosm of the Tanzanian safari experience and is one home to the legendary tree-climbing lions.
A world heritage site and a 7th world wide wonder, Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park is justifiably famed for its annual migration. Here you can see 6 million wildebeests, gazelle, zebra and more trek for fresh grazing.
The wealth of wildlife offers both breathtaking and a wide range of game-viewing, as well as front row seats to the remarkable spectacular of predator vs prey, in which the golden-maned lions, the leopards and the prowling cheetahs have their feasts.
The island of Zanzibar (also known as Unguja) is known as the ‘Spice Island' because of its long-standing association with the clove industry. A low-lying stretch of land, approximately 37 km off the coast of Tanzania, it has always exerted a powerful fascination over the imagination of the world, that is out of all proportion to its size.
Zanzibar Town, on the western side of the island is the main settlement, the best-known part of which is Stone Town. Directly east of Stone Town is the growing section of Ng'ambo whilst to the north of the town are a number of pristine beaches. At the northern tip of the island is the dhow-building centre and tourist resort of Nungwi, whilst some of Zanzibar's best beaches are to be found along the eastern shore.
Stone Town is the oldest section of Zanzibar Town and is made up of a labyrinth of winding lanes, ancient stone houses, Arabian arches, heavy carved wooden doors, circular towers, narrow latticed windows, overhanging balconies and a fascinating selection of bazaars, curio shops, art galleries and spice troves.
