6-Night Caribbean Coast Tour

Day 1: Bogota

Welcome to Colombia! Arrival at Bogota's El Dorado International Airport, 2,640 metres above sea level.

 

Transfer to your hotel in the Candelaria district and end of the day free to enjoy the Colombian capital at your leisure, where you'll find modern districts and the historic centre, urban architecture and green parks.

 

Settle into your hotel, where you'll find a small packet of Colombian local coffee in your room.

 

Overnight at Casa Deco Hotel in Candelaria district in a Junior Suite. Includes: private transport, room and breakfast.

 

Day 2: Bogota

Day dedicated to the visit of Bogota:


Cerro de Monserrate, to enjoy a breathtaking view of the capital and its surroundings. Perched at an altitude of 3152 metres, the Sanctuary, accessible by cable car or funicular, is is a place of pilgrimage, particularly popular on religious feast days.

 

The Paloquemao market, where you will be immersed in a whirlwind of colours and scents, taste new flavours and can find all the ingredients needed to make the Bogotanos' favourite dishes.

 


The Candelaria district, the historical and cultural centre of Bogotá; along the cobbled streets, discover colourful facades, beautiful colourful facades, beautiful carved wooden balconies and baroque churches.

 

The Gold Museum, one of the most dazzling on the continent. Nearly 34,000 gold coins are on display, making it the world's largest collection of pre-Hispanic gold and silverware honouring the Quimbaya, Taironas, Muiscas or Tolimas civilizations.

 


The Botero Foundation, dedicated to the Colombian artist Fernando Botero, where his own works  (about a hundred drawings, paintings and sculptures), as well as his private collection, which includes no less than 85 masterpieces by internationally renowned artists

The Plaza Bolivar with its imposing buildings (Town Hall, Palace of Justice, Cathedral, National Congress)

Day 3: Bogata to Cartagena

Transfer to Bogota airport for your domestic flight.

Domestic flight to Cartagena Welcome to Cartagena, on the Caribbean coast. Transfer to your hotel in the historic centre.

 

Half day visit to the historical centre and the main sites of Cartagena.
We propose to discover the past and present of Cartagena on foot by
visiting the most beautiful monuments of the city such as the Clock Tower or Don Pedro de Heredia. During the visit, you will notice the different influences - Romanesque, Moorish colonial, military, Arab, Spanish and North American - that have shaped Cartagena.

 

You will also discover the Palace of the Inquisition, one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, or the San Pedro Claver sanctuary, formerly dedicated to Spanish priests and missionaries.

Day 4: Cartagena - Rosario Islands - Cartagena

Transfer from your hotel to the port of Cartagena.Free day of relaxation in the heart of the beautiful Rosario archipelago. On the programme: lazing on the beaches, swimming in the heart of the Caribbean, discovery of the mangrove, exploration of the seabed and tasting of local dishes based on fish and coconut rice.

 

  • Note 1: on arrival at the port of Cartagena, you will have to pay the port tax (22 000 COP to date)
  • Note 2: 2 hours sailing time round trip
  • Note 3: the Rosario Islands are very touristy, especially on weekends.

The Caribbean coast is rich in exotic fruits with bright colours and delicious flavours. During one hour, you can choose this option to discover and taste a wide variety of fruits, from the most common to the most exotic. All your senses will be challenged during this refreshing experience.

Day 5: Cartagena - Tayrona Region - Rio Don Diego - Tayronaka - Tayrona Region

 

Departure for the Tayrona region, on the Caribbean coast. From the road, you will be able to admire the Cienaga Grande, the largest body of water in the country, home to many species of birds. Transfer to your hotel in the Tayrona area.

 

Note: 5 hours drive.

 

Free afternoon to enjoy the Tayrona region, between Sierra Nevada and the Caribbean Sea, walking in the rainforest and lazing on the huge palm-fringed beaches.

 


Note: due to strong currents, swimming on the beaches of the region is strongly discouraged at certain times.

 

Optional:
Departure for the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Take a path through the jungle to reach the Tayronaka reserve. The city of Tayronaka is an ancient lost city of the Tayrona Indians. It is precisely there that the film Mission was made in 1986 with Robert de Niro. Accompanied by a guide, you will retrace the history of this ancient civilization. After touring the ruins, you will go down the Rio Don Diego in a buoy. On the way you can observe howler monkeys and beautiful tropical birds.
After lunch, you go down the river on a lancha, a small motorboat,
to the ocean. The arrival on the ocean is spectacular! You enjoy a privileged moment on this superb and totally wild beach.


Note 1: about 30 minutes walking in the jungle, easy level. About 30 minutes of down the river in a buoy.

 

Note 2: bring a swimming costume, hat and suncream for the river trip.

 

Overnight at Senda Koguiwa Hotel in Deluxe Room.

Day 6: Tayrona Park to Tayrona Region

Day to enjoy the beautiful Tayrona arch between the jungle and the Caribbean Sea. You leave from Cañaveral beach for a walk in the rainforest. On the way you will see beautiful landscapes and walk on magnificent beaches. You will stop for lunch on the beach of your choice and you can enjoy a swim.

 

  • Note 1: your passport will be required at the park entrance
  • Note 2 : 3 to 4 hours of walking during the day. Be careful, it is very hot in the
    the park.
  • Note 3 : bring walking shoes, comfortable clothes, swimming costume and backpack (to carry your picnic and water).
  • Note 4: due to strong currents, swimming on the beaches of Tayrona Park and the surrounding coastline is often not recommended.

Day 7: Tayrona Region - Bogotá

Domestic flight to Bogotá.

Arrive at Bogotá's El Dorado International Airport. Check-in for your international flight. Includes: private transportation, domestic flight.

6-Night Caribbean Coast Tour and 4-Night Trek to the Lost City

Day 7: Santa Marta - Ciudad Perdida

Lost City trek Extension: In the early morning, transfer by all-terrain vehicle to the village of El Mamey, the starting point of the trek to the Lost City of Teyuna.

 

After lunch in the village, accompanied by your local guide, you will start the trek in a most tropical setting. This is the beginning of a 4-day trek with the objective of arriving at the Lost City, a sacred site of the Kogui Indians.

 

Driving time: about 1 hour 30 minutes

Walking time: 4 to 5 hours

Note: the portage is only for collective belongings. You will have to carry your own belongings during this trek.

We advise you to take only what you need and leave your other luggage at the hotel.

The guides are Spanish-speaking, some of them speak a little English.

 

Option to have belongings carried: Please consult tour operator.

Night in hammock or bed with mosquito net and blankets.

Day 8: Lost City

Early departure for a hike in the heart of the high valley formed by the Rio Buritaca.

On the way, you will pass through small indigenous villages and may meet some Koguis Indians while crossing varied landscapes that lead to the locality of Mutanshi.

Lunch by the river where you will have the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing swim.

Resume walking and settle in at camp 2.

Walking time: about 6 hours

Overnight in a hammock or bed with mosquito net and blankets.

Included: breakfast, dinner, excursion (group service), guide (trekking), local Spanish-speaking guide, guide fee, lunch, room & breakfast

Day 9: Lost City

Departure for the site of the Ciudad Perdida, or Lost City. After climbing the 1,200 stone steps, you will reach the Teyuna archaeological site, known to archaeologists as Buritaca 200.

 

About 140 terraces connected by stairs and served by complex water distribution systems were uncovered in 1975-76. On these platforms stood the buildings of an ancient civilisation that has disappeared and is known as the Tayrona, whose descendants still live in these mountains.

After the visit, return to the camp for lunch and then resume the walk to reach the last camp of this trek.

 

Walking time: about 6 hours Overnight in hammock or bed with basic comfort with mosquito net and blankets.

Day 10: Lost City - Santa Marta - Tayrona Region

Last day of walking in the heart of the Sierra Nevada. You will reach the village of El Mamey on steep trails with many descents. Throughout the day, you will be able to observe numerous birds.

 

Lunch in the village of El Mamey and then transfer by vehicle to Tayrona.

 

Walking time: about 6 hours

Driving time: about 1 hour 30 minutes
