Hidden Treasures of Ayutthaya
Drive for an hour and a half drive through the rural outskirts of Bangkok to Ayutthaya, the former capital of the Thai kingdom for 417 years. Founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, its destruction by the Burmese army in 1767 led to the collapse of the kingdom.
The ruins of all the most important buildings have been consolidated, repaired and sometimes rebuilt, giving visitors a glimpse of its former splendour. The Bang Pa-In Summer Palace, built in the 17th century and restored by King Rama V, is an incredible blend of European, Chinese and Thai architecture.
The Lost Temple of Angkor: Explore Banteay Srei & Beng Mealea
Start the day with a transfer to Banteay Srei "The citadel of women", the only major temple not built by a monarch. Originally built in the 10th century and dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, this red sandstone temple is one of the most important structures in Angkor, as its walls are decorated with elaborate carvings that have been remarkably well preserved.
This afternoon, enjoy a pleasant drive through lush countryside to the jungle temple of Beng Mealea, a Hindu temple but with some carvings depicting Buddhist motifs. The temple is largely unrestored, with trees and vegetation growing through its towers and courtyards, and many of its stones lying in large heaps, giving it an enchanting atmosphere.
Away from the usual tourist routes, this remote temple offers a fascinating opportunity to experience a ruined Angkor temple surrounded by dense jungle, allowing you to stay away from the crowds.
Mount Phnom Kulen & Kampong Phluk floating village
Enjoy a scenic drive to Mount Phnom Kulen, considered Cambodia's holiest mountain, has deep roots in Khmer tradition, dating back to 802 AD when Jayavarman II proclaimed Cambodia's independence from Java.
You visit two remarkable sites, the Preah Ang Thom pagoda with its giant reclining Buddha, and the 1,000 lingas carved in the "valley of the Lingas" or "river of the Lingas", carved with sculptures of gods and Hindu symbols, a spiritual site revered by the Cambodian people. Stop at a waterfall and take a refreshing bath. Lunch at a local restaurant.
Continue your afternoon visit to the floating village of Kampong Phluk which is one of the most impressive and intact permanent installations on the Tonle Sap Lake. Home to over 3,000 villagers, this charming village allows you to observe the submerged mangrove forest and lakeside village life up close. Climb aboard the local boat for a relaxing and informative cruise. Immerse yourself in nature and get a glimpse of the diverse lifestyle of the villages on the lake as your boat glides between mangroves, houses on stilts, the floating school and the police station.
Watch floating life unfold as it does everywhere else in Cambodia. Have your camera ready to capture the panoramic view of Tonle Sap Lake, local women or children crossing the river channel, or villagers selling and buying produce at a makeshift floating market.
