Your destinations —
Phuket
Phuket Town has morphed into an artsy, culturally rich capital, while Rawai on the island's southern tip remains blissfully laid-back, despite development.
The twin west-coast beaches of Kata and Karon reel in holidaymakers who like their trips easy. An upmarket twist awaits along Hat Surin and Ao Bang Thao, while, further north, things quieten down as you thread through Sirinat National Park and Khao Phra Thaew reserve.
Ultimately, the island’s affinity for luxury far outshines its other stereotypes. Jet-setters swing through in droves, getting pummelled during swanky spa sessions and sipping sundowners at fashion-forward nightspots or on rented yachts. And you don’t have to be an heiress to tap into Phuket’s style-packed to-do list. With deep-sea diving, high-end dining, shopping, and fabulous white beaches, you might forget to leave.
Khao Lak
Khao Lak, in Thailand's Phang Nga province, is a hidden paradise of sun, sea and sand, as well as lush tropical greenery, granite mountains and stunning waterfalls. Colourful temples, bustling markets, idyllic islands - whatever it is you're after, there is a good chance you will find it in this beautiful corner of Thailand.
Crystal blue water, warm tropical nights and cooling breezes coming off the Andaman Sea provide the ideal atmosphere to relax and unwind. Here you can visit outstanding islands offering splendid corals as well as seaweeds, sea flowers, corallines and various species of fish.
Koh Samui
One of Thailand's most popular holiday spots, Koh Samui is famed for its swathes of white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and breathtaking scenery. Mass tourism has brought bustling nightlife and great restaurants, but it is still possible to find a quiet stretch of sand for total escapism. Island hopping is popular too, as are watersports and nature treks.
Look for steaming street-side food stalls beyond the beach, backpacker shanties plunked down on quiet stretches of sand and secreted Buddhist temples along the backstreets. Featuring a variety of beaches the island has a broad appeal, whether you want to be in the heart of the action or away from it all.
Called the “Coconut Island,” Koh Samui is situated in the Gulf of Thailand bordering the South China Sea. Once a haven for fishermen, it is Thailand’s third-largest island. Visit the nearby Lamai Temple, the revered Big Buddha Temple, and magnificent vistas at Chaweng View. See the strange formations at Grandmother and Grandfather Rock and mingle with the locals at the multicultural fishing village Huatanon. Stop to see Koh Samui’s sacred mummified monk at the Kunaram Temple, or engage with nature at Namuang Waterfall.
