Algarve —
The Algarve is truly a year-round destination, brimming with gorgeous scenery, sun-soaked beaches, and lively coastal resorts. As the region spans virtually the entire southern coast of Portugal, there is much to see and do here: the popular resort of Albufeira beckons with its charming churches and lively bars, while in Sagres, visitors can experience a slower side to Portuguese life, surrounded by beautiful waters where surfers gather to tackle the bracing Atlantic waves. The coast offers clear waters and a warm climate - the ideal destination for water sports such as surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and paddleboarding.
Popular cycling routes in the Algarve include the Ecovia do Litoral, which follows the coastline from Sagres to Vila Real de Santo António, and the Via Algarviana, which is a 300-kilometer mountain biking route that takes riders through some of the region's most stunning landscapes.
Enthusiasts will enjoy touring the world-class golf courses, popular due to the mild climate, and stunning scenery. Featuring more than 40 golf courses, many of which have been designed by some of the biggest names in golf course architecture, the region also hosts several high-profile golf tournaments throughout the year.
Foodies can follow the scent of delicious ocean-to-plate seafood, as well as locally produced wine, almonds and figs. Visitors can explore ancient castles and forts, traditional villages, and museums dedicated to local crafts and traditions. Travellers looking for a lively holiday in the sun should head to the nightlife centres of Albufeira or glamorous Vilamoura. Amidst the busy resorts, there are also smaller beachside towns, such as Alvor, where you can enjoy a more relaxed break.
