Mandalay is still the centre of Burmese culture. The city is named after the hill that peaks 236 m, located at the North-East of the Royal Palace. Mandalay is also the most "Burmese" city in Myanmar, surrounded by the four ancient cities of Amarapura, Sagaing, Ava and Mingun.

The Mahamuni Pagoda, one of the most honoured Buddha statues in the country, is completely covered with gold leaf. The Kuthodaw Pagoda, nicknamed as the “World’s Biggest Book” for its collection of 729 marble plaques in which the Buddhist teachings are inscribed.
